Which Oil should I buy?
Hi I have a 1995 2.5 Diesel Tintop, The oil is a wee bit low and I was thinking of topping it up however after much head scratching in Halfords I am at a loss as to which type of oil I should buy
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Of all the oils available, the one recommended to me by a diesel mechanic very much respected in the trade was believe it or the one that Lidl sells, so I have used it for the last eight years with no probs, I also change the oil every six months as a matter of habit.

Cheers thanks for that, I noticed that it said use different oil in low temps. Well I'm in Scotland and it's been baltic for weeks. Should I use the oil recommended for low temps just because of the current weather?

I will probably get shot down in flames, but being a cheapskate I buy Wilkinson's diesel (5 litre).
A pump makes changing oil less of a chore and encourages more frequent changes.
Every few months I pump 5 litres out and replace it wth clean oil. Full drain and filter change once a year if mileage is not excessive and engine never thrashed.
Not seen any in Lidl, David, will look out for some.

Re: Which Oil should I buy?
Well yes ! The oil suggested just has the required viscosity (thickness) at the given temperature, and for lower temperatures its better when starting to have the right one, after a few minutes the temperature rises and the oil will continue working in the normal fashion. So in general its better to use the oil for the temperature stated but there is no need to change it just because in a month or two it warms up again. If you change the oil on a 6 monthly basis then it might be an idea to use the lower temp one during the Winter and the higher temp one during the Summer, but I wouldn't suggest changing it just for that reason alone.

I use a 10/40 oil ,not bothered which type because i change it regularly, it does not have to be the most expensive.

Hi mikeonb4c,
Try Euro Car Parts 5 litres of 5w 40 £19.00 or Wilkinson's £22.00 for 5 litres.

10/40 semi synth like DBO....... changed to it since I found that Jap owners and other vehicles with the same engine find that 30w a little suspect on WL-T engines....
