Axle stands - best location to use?

Post by Dr.Jekyll » Sun Jan 02, 2011 4:17 pm

Just a quick question really to put my mind at ease, hope you don’t mind. To place the bongo up on axle stands you follow the following procedure:

1. Jack Bongo up using the correct lifting points (as marked on jack etc) using trolley jack/scissor jack etc.
2. Whilst Bongo is up on jack, quickly reach under and place axle stand on the axle about halfway between wheel and diff.
3. Slowly take Bongo off jack and the weight is then taken via the axle and the axle stand.
4. Remove jack and repeat process on other side of the Bongo

If this is not the way to do it, or you don't rest the Bongo on the axel (I've heard not on the axle as this can overstress the axle casing) where do you put the axle stand?

Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry can't help but I have wondered the same myself. I can't remember for the life of me where I chucked them when I used to use them on the odd occasion years ago.

Hi Dr.Jekyll,

That is the way to use AXLE stands, the diff casing should be OK.
If you are jacking up the front of the vehicle,do not put the stands or jack under the wishbone as these have a habit of rusting quite badly.

Cheers..

I'm stating the obvious, but make sure the surface is solid (not soft tarmac), and absolutely level. If not, the first axle stand might tip when you start to jack up the second side.
