Sidelight, Dashlights and Foglight = MOT fail - help!

Post by dblake » Tue Jan 04, 2011 5:48 pm

Hi there
Just had my Bongo fail it's MOT because of the following:

a) Front sidelight not working
b) Rear Fog not working
c) Rear Fog switch illumination not working

oh and d) the obligitory number plate bulb gone! (that i can handle!)

Now i checked the lights (but not the foglight doh) last night and they were fine.

On bringing her home noted the sidelights and dash lights werent working.
I've checked the forum and noted that the sidelight/dashlight problem is an indicator stalk contact problem potentially. Tried the WD40 and 20x on and off "fix" to no avail (although maybe i need to leave it longer to soak in more?). Is the only other alternative a new indicator stalk? Or is there any other posibility?

The Foglight/Switch problem -could that just be down to a loose connection etc? Would that effect both the light and the switch light?

I'm admittedly rubbish at most practical things so if any of these need anything more than a bit of investigation/work i'm stuck lol In that case any recommendations for where i can get these sorted local to Banbury, Oxon?

Cheers

go with the obvious first, change the bulb in the fog and check the fuse for the side lights
fuse number 10 for dash lights (fuse box inside the cab near drivers leg)
fuse number 3 under bonnet for the lights.
If there has been a short due to a faulty switch it could have blown a fuse.
Lost without my Bongo.

Thanks Dave, will check the fuses when daylight and positive temperature return!
I am leaning more towards the indicator stalk connectors though given dash and sidelights dont work and everything else if fine - seems a bit too much of a coincidence to me.

Also if the fog light bulb goes - would that mean the switch illumination would stop also?

Sounds like the same problem I've just had!

In my case, it was the relay that failed, causing side lights / tail lights / front fogs / dashboard illumination to all fail, as they're all on the same relay.

Bongobits were very helpful, and are sending a relay out to me, so if that is what has failed for your Bongo too, it might be worth giving them a call.

Its quite easy to test if its the relay, as there are 2 the same. 1 does the side lights/ dash / tail, the other does the headlights.
Swap them over and see if it makes a difference.

If you need an indicator stalk, I may have one in my spares that I am slowly ebaying. But probably a fuse or relay by the sound of it.

Just to update - got my relay from Bongobits (£13 delivered), fitted and everything was hunky-dory again :)
Well until the day of the MOT retest when one of the sidelight bulbs blew ](*,)
A quick diversion to Halfruads to pick one up and 30 mins later an MOT pass =D>

Alls well that ends well eh?
Well apart from my Visa card being declined and finding out i've been the victim of identity theft...
