hello everyone need some more advice please, just spent new year in devon so i had a good run before i left i fitted an I alert temp gauge from haydn because my mason modified gauge is always reading just off hot which i find a little distressing. The highest readings i got over the journey was 86 which i think is okay so why is the mason reading so high. I have to set the alarm at about 6/7 or its constantly bleeping any ideas anyone? I'm thinking of taking the mason off because i dont think its working properly.

check the single wire connection on top of the temp sender,it can get crudded up. its to be found at the front of the head drivers side.could try replacing the sender unit,it should have a red or black marking on the top if its a gen mazda one, the copies are usually silver at the top. ive noticed that the two other common copy parts are not as good as the gen mazda ones,but its your choice.has it any history of boiling up??. ive removed several that appeared to go out of wack,if the motor has been run hot.
where is the i alert fitted.rear of head bolt hole?.
there is one other thing i can point to and thats the stat.has the bypass port been cleaned at the top of the stat housing??.has it had a recent stat/ coolant change??.
if this port is not clean it can make the motor run at slightly elevated temps.
my i alert fitted to the head does not run as hot as yours!!

If you have the (((i-alert))) sensor bolted "as suggested" to the rear of the cylinder head then 86C sounds fine under normal driving conditions. Ady's is probably a little lower co's his cooling system is 110%.......

My Mason unit started showing intermittent high readings over the last few months - switching the ignition off & restarting returned things to normal + the cooling fans never cut in, so I knew that the gauge was faulty. Dave Mason reckoned that it could be symtomatic of a short between the red/blue wires. Hr=e supplied a replacement gauge & all has been well since then. He was going to investigate the "faulty unit" but I have'nt heard back from him yet. Mine seemed to be the first that had shown this fault, but it's possible that there are others out there. Might be worth emailing Dave.

Hi guys
i`ve been a little worried by my masons high needle position although the alarm has never beeped. Last monday i was booting it along a dual carriageway for a good 20 mins and the needle started to rise and the alarm beeped once. When i backed off to 65 needle went back to its normal position. The normal has been about 4/5 mm from the hot line.Engine ran fine and has never used a drop of water also have a low level alarm fitted. Not sure of the last flush it had so i`ve bought a new thermostat and water pump and am going to do a thorough flush fit new parts and the dreaded bleed this weekend. It will be interesting to see where the needle goes to after that.

Where as mine seems to run at 92 under normal driving conditions for some reason.

yep we all put them on the bold at the rear of engine,mine runs at about 92,in cold weather bout 86.

interesting thread this mine runs at around 85 last summer and 75 in the recent cold weather

thanks for all the replies very interesting but the thing is the highest reading i got was 86 this was at about 70 mph uphill fully loaded surfboards on roof etc, normal driving it sits around 72 which as i said previously im happy with. when i first fitted the mason alarm i had a new mazda stat fitted, cleaned housing and a new temp sensor also changed coolant but still temp was high. My mechanic [who does know bongos] suggested to take it back to ian taylor who could not find anything wrong. So surely it must be the mason so im taking it off and trying the other gauge modification thanks again

No problem with my Mason gauge.....readings are ....... 12:00 normally and ambient +5c below 5c ambient runs at 12:30........ all down to how the systems runs and there are some techie graphs on another thread "Cold Bottom Hose" which shows this

and 90,92 is in summer down motrway.does this sound ok?
