Heated Mirrors

Post by Stuart Dunn » Wed Jan 19, 2011 12:00 pm

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone has heated mirrors fitted on their bongo's?

I have a 97 P reg AFT 2.5TD Bongo with electric mirrors, but they aren't heated, Should they be? They fold and move via the electrics but don't seem to de-frost or warm up.

Just wondering if they should and if there's a viable upgrade to do so, or something I can get from another bongo.

If anyone could shed any light on the matter that would be great.

This subject is something of some contention... When i press the rear heater screen button on my bongo, ONE of the mirrors does demist (slow though) Both of them used to, but i changed the standard black mirrors for some chrome versions years ago, now only one appears to heat.

i was looking at doing it using small bore plastic pipe fed from the heater,on/off switch may be hard to do though, but then why not just leave them on when on screen demist.

Hi
I think you could possibly add another relay to your heated rear window switch??.....maybe on the power to the window side of the relay for the rear window...only a small switching current...or put another switch in, with relay
Cheers

Thank you all for the replies, does anyone know if they are fitted to certian models as standard? or if i could find out? Also how easy is it to get the glass out to fit an element.

Sorry to keep firing the questions at you all.

As my post above implies, Mine certainly appears to have heated mirrors (now only one working). I can't see them being a retro fit, as i changed both my mirrors for one's with the chrome covers.. so if somebody in Japan had changed/modded my mirrors at some stage, then the bongo i got my chrome mirrors from had them also! :D

I have just got a set of retro-fit heated mirrors from eBay, and was looking into the wiring of them today. As they only draw about 1A each, and the rear de-icer element draws about 10A I was planning on just wiring them into the same circuit which is fused at 30A.

Connector X-08 looks like a likely point to tap in, on the Black/Yellow wire.

However, I've just been and had a look at the mirror itself, and the possible wiring routes back through the door etc.

Has anyone got any info / pictures of the mirror unit with the glass out, so I can see if there is space for an additional wire down through the pivot area? The mirrirs I have bought havr adhesive strips on the back, I reckon they are designed to just stick onto the original glass (intact or smashed!) - but I'm not keen to destroy my existing mirror glass unless I really have to.

Unfortunately the lushprojects diagram for the mirrors isn't too detailed.

Cheers
Dave

Ste, you sure it's not just some sort of heat dissipation coming up from a warm engine...? Which is the theory i have with mine...
The auto closure mirror mod i did seems to stop em from icing after cold nights.

I think mikeonb4c would know... I'm pretty certain (from memory he's had a few apart repairing the folding mechanism at some point, including some pics on how it was done!????

Hi Geoff
To get the mirror out, they just prize out with your fingers, and they pop into a frame in the rear. I can't speak for the feed hole in the mirror, but they must have been fitted before, for the guy to have undertaken to make a production run???
As I said, I have that on the "To Do" list, so let us know how you progress
Cheers

Ahhhh... The cover on the outside un-clips.

Right, I'll have another go next time it's daylight and dry - no guarantees when that will be though!

Looks like adding an extra wire for the heater is possible.
