Rear Brake Drum Shoes.

Hi guys,has anyone got any idea where I can get a new set of brake shoes from for my 1996 bongo sgl3 TD.
The brakes were sticking and coming on when reversing,had them looked at and the linings have come adrift from the shoes.Any help will be appreciated,thank you.Eric.

Hi EckerB, sorry to hear that your handbrake shoes have let go mate... It might be worth pm-ing YBB (you've been bongod) on here, as i THINK he had a mate that could re-line the shoes at a relatively small cost. Or perhaps Ian sells them in the club shop?

Thanks for all your replies guys.The shoes are expensive aint they! Got to have some though from somewhere,none in the shop.I`ll carry on looking around and see if I can get any cheaper.Never heard of shoes being relined,but these ones are not used for braking to stop,maybe an option.

It used to be common practise. In fact, if memory serves me correctly, some spares places did brake shoes on an exchange basis, so that they could just be relined and reused Probably not so common nowadays, as shoes are rapidly dying out and probably come from China anyway

I've never heard of brake shoes being relined before either, but unless you live on a very steep slope they have got to be an option. I would give YBB a PM, you never know his mate my be able to stick the original ones back on if you have still got them. That should save you a packet.

£70.42 at Japanese Auto Solutions too, this seems to be the going price for new ones. If it is possible to use second hand ones then you could try ebygum32 or one of the others currently breaking Bongos to see if they have any available.

The old grey matter just stirred up a memory of brake shoes being relined.I think I remember that they were made of asbestos and rivetted back on to the shoe,as they wore down you could hear the squeal of the rivet on the drum,that told you to renew them!I think that`s right guys,anyone else remember this?Bet there isn`t anybody out there now to do it to save you a bob or two.LOL

Hi eckerB,

The early liners were riveted to the shoes,the later liners were Bonded to the shoes.
There will probably still be someone that does this work.

Looks like it's a service that's still available, due to it being used with industrial braking systems.
