why can't these be used ?

Post by Bombadilo » Fri Jan 21, 2011 9:18 pm

hello folks,

my mud and snow tyres that came with the bongo are now down to the legal limit.

i imagine they are slightly softer than standard rubber.

i find them really useful as i spend a lot of time going across muddy fields and orchards.

while looking for a new set i came across these.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... K:MEWAX:IT

why are these illegal on the road ?

if i went for something chunkier (not these) than the standard M&S tyres would that be a trade off for comfort on the open road ?

any recommendations ?

any advice appreciated.

hubby reckons it could be because they are below street legal standard or maybe retreads

I would guess that they aren't homologated for road use, race tyres usually aren't. They probably have 'Not For Road Use' marked on them.

They look like cut slicks, they would probably destroy themselves after about 20 miles of road use.

Ask the seller the question - or print out Advert and ask a tyre dealer.

They are not speed rated, wont have E marks will be soft compound and have very little in the way of strengthening plies in the tyre so very different to a tyre as we know it for road use, we buy tyres to last 20,000 miles for competition use often a stage!! of 20 odd miles is enough for them to change them, as they have lost their maximum speed and grip then sell them to someone else doing rallying or short oval racing on shale who is not a front runner and will get an event of two out of them.

In an accident you would be prosecuted and your insurance would be invalid.

i had no intention of buying the ebay ones - i was just curious.

can anyone recommend a 15" tyre that will get me in and out of muddy orchards ?

i've seen some avon M&S tyres - any others folks could suggest ?

hello again folks,

i've sorted myself with some new rubber.

i found a local tyre fitter selling 195 70R 15 Nexen Roadstone Eurowin 700 - £60ea fitted.

they look so much better than the mud and snow tyres that came off. (they even have a graphic of a skier on them - whoopee!)

my old ones were in a much worse state than i had realised.

the bongo handles so much better now - i dread to think what would have happened if i had gone on a long run

anyway, cheers for all useful comments as usual folks
