2.0 litre petrol mpg

Hi,
bit of a poser, engine runs fine nice and smooth ( lpg ) auto box checked nothing amiss there and the brakes not binding, most of the time I only use it for short runs and I get about 15 mpg on a long run maybe 18 mpg. vehicle is x reg with about 75000k's on the clock. new plugs, leads and distributor cap but still trying to locate a rotor arm. I do drive quite consertatively 30 round town rarely over 55 when out of the city, where can I find that extra 5-10 mph? thankfull for any help cheers.

Hi short answer no, not been to A&S but I did change the filter when I did the plugs'n things

Well it's good news the autobox is fine.

check all the usual suspects, including:

General service items like good spark plugs, clean filters, clean the MAF sensor, make sure it has the correct grade of oil etc.

Also check if the brakes are binding and the tyres are properly inflated.

Then maybe look at other things like is the disty cap, carbon finger and rotor arm in good condition. finally it all depends a bit on how you drive, short journeys, heavy foot, hilly terrain, strong headwinds etc etc can all play a big part. For example on a bad day when I'm in a hurry, lots on board, into strong headwind my mpg can go right down to 16mpg, extreme set of circumstances but overall I get 22MPG on LPG out of a V6 so it shows things can stack up. Fortunately that has only happened 2 times in 4 years !!

Another idea would be to check the 02 sensor is working and connected. Google testing 02 sensor for ways of doing this, its easy with a digital multimeter. These sensors can get lazy and fail over time and then cause the engine to run a bit richer.

If you have someone local with the correct diagnostics machine they can plug into the ECU and read codes, check the sensors such as 02, engine temp sensor etc are all reading as they should.

Are you sure you are using the brim to brim and reset trip method so you are certain of the distance covered and fuel quantity used? Have you checked the speedo is accurate with a GPS system, any of those out could affect the calculations?

done most of those things not the o2 though (due for its 1000 mile gas check soon hope they check that!) hav'nt done the rotor arm as i cant locate the right one yet. speedo reads about 4mph to fast at 30, would the counter read to many kilometers also? cheers

Not sure about the trip meter, could well do but if it did it would have more miles on it that you had really covered which would make the mpg worse !!

Maybe worth checking with a GPS one day, you never know.

Didn't realise you were on gas, you do know you will loose a bit of MPG with gas compared to petrol?

MAF easy to clean, its somewhere in the air intake between the air filter and the throttle body housing. o2 sensor will be before the cat in the exhaust, it will be a simple 2 wire system so that takes ages to warm up enough to give a useful reading the to the ECU, however they are cheap and easy to replace if it's gone faulty.

MAF=mass air flow, google it all to do with fuel/air ratio's me finx May be worth checking exhaust for a hole, mine had a bitch of a hidden one split seam chucked emmissions out the window as well as making the o2 sensor(lambda) not read right and making it over fuel and no you couldn't hear it blowing although having said that i havn't got lpg or a 2 ltr so i don't have a clue if that would affect lpg but it may affect your petrol consumption i think

I'v got a 2lr with an LPG coversion and with just running around town we get around 20mpg. Getting its 1000 mile check on the gas system today but on pure petrol I was getting 21 mpg anyway.

I brim my tank and work out the MPG every time and ive been getting 18.5 and 19.5 mpg during the recent cold spell.....nowhere near as economical as my 2 previous 2.5 deisels

Get 22mpg out of my 97 ATF V6 on petrol & 20 on LPG and thats carting full side conversion loaded will equipment. On my 2001 V6 Tin Top currently getting 20mpg ( yet to have LPG conversion) so there does seem to be slight variation vehicle to vehicle. Would have thought should match a V6 on consumption. Just a thought, had read on forum that someone had not knowingly been driving around with rear air con on and that had drastically dragged mpg down. Plus, what type of tyers are you running on? Not an expert on tyres but do know that rolling resistance can effect mpg.
