Geoff - thanks that all looks very useful. The couple of hours charge was because my son offered to come round so I took the battery off charge and put in the van temporarily. When I checked the voltage on the glowplug rail it was 11.75 v with the ignition off so I will retry with the glow plugs on. Is it difficult to remove the glowplugs, any special care to be taken?

i would check the glow plugs as they will give the results you got if you do replace them there is two types so take with you when buying new i would use ngk ones as they are the best imo the battery age is not the best so may be a bit of both but the glow plugs cost nothing to check (take them all out and try them they should glow red within 5sec at the tip ) the other thing that it might be the earth strap to the engine is faulty?

Hi Ron,
You should not get any voltage on the rail,with the ignition off.

I would also check the earth of the vehicle

I'd have been interested to hear what your SB voltage dropped to when the starter motor was being turned, and what your sons SB voltage drop was when he was turning the starter motor on his car.

Teen: I was mistaken - I should have said with the ignition on.
Mike: I didnt check while my son was here - should have. At the moment I am charging the SB, when I put it back in I'm wondering if I will have enough hands to start the motor, press the accelerator briefly, hold the terminals on the battery posts and read the multimeter?? I will try to read the gloplug busbar voltage tho at the same time.

Anyone. I've looked up in the fact sheets info re taking out the gloplugs and it seems rather a handful. Am i right in thinking this or is there a simpler way to get just one out?

update in case anyone refers in the future.
Called out breakdown service this morning - with his booster on the battery turned over but wouldnt start. Sprayed Easystart into the air intake and fired up so looks like gloplugs. Taking into garage tomorrow to have them checked/replaced. Relieved it was nothing worse.

Nice one Diesels are a pain to start with even 1 or 2 faulty heater (glow) plugs

You get the smoke from unburnt fuel and lumpy idle on cold mornings is another sign there past their best
