Why two batteries and what size

Post by AJCIOW » Thu Feb 03, 2011 12:08 pm

Can anyone tell me why my 96 2.5d Freetop has two batteries. They are both car type and connected in parallel, not a leisure battery. Also they look like 75 ah, what size should they be, I was thinking that two 75's make one 150 or am I just being naive.

Hi,

If you have two in parallel then you have the winter pack - meaning your Bongo originated from Northern Japan which also means its more susceptible to rust. I know this - as I have one, though somebody pinched my second battery tray and mines also rusty.

You should also see a funny little button by your right knee with an engine symbol on- this is the "super cold start" button which restricts the exhaust to aid very cold starting - DO NOT use it - as it could seize meaning you'll need a new exhaust system... Mine hasnt done it yet, but theres plenty on here about those that have..

Hope this helps,

Steve

Cheers,

Mine was rusty had a load of welding done on it and waxoiled the underside. It also had undersized "snow" tyres on it. I have used this button over the cold spot but it drank fuel, i will check the exhaust do you know which is the bit that siezes.

I presume that in the Uk the winter pack is not realy needed and I can swop the battery for a 95ah and get rid of the other one.

Just follow the exhaust pipe - you can't miss the valve.
Yes, you can just use one battery on the driver's side - just make sure you insulate the other positive lead from the passenger side battery 8)
