Can you get a V6 with 4WD?

Post by hembramacho » Thu Feb 24, 2011 6:55 pm

Quick question.

Can you get a V6 petrol with 4 Wheel Drive, or do they only come in 2WD?

Cheers

No 4wd drive on petrol, but you can get a limited slip differential, lsd, on the back axle. My V6 has it and it does work well in muddy conditions. I've got out of a lot of mud wallows where others were sliding and floundering. Mine is not so good in snow, but I have road tyres which are the main cause. Apart from the last two years we rarely get snow here so winter tyres are not worth it.

Main problem off road is the ground clearance. Its not good and muddy fields are its safe limit. I have a 10cm lower which does not help, but even without it I would not off road my Bongo anywhere with rocks or even high speed bumps.

The Russian owners site will tell you if a Bongo has lsd. Also you can tell if you drive it on a loose or slippery surface as the limited slip will lock and release if grip is lost.

It seems at some point after they discontinued the 929, Mazda had a fair few V6 drivetrains left over in the parts bin. After a little head scratching as to what to do with them it was decided to shoehorn them into the Bongo.

As the 929 was never conceived to be a 4WD, only 2 wheel gearboxed versions were available.

There may be a couple of expensively converted jobbies somewhere on the planet but Hens Teeth would be easier to find - and maintain.

Cheers for that - thought as much but just needed some confirmation. :)

Thanks
