Sediment Light

Post by pistonbroke » Sat Feb 26, 2011 1:04 pm

My sediment warning light stayed on after start up this morning. I've watched the you-tube of Kirsty bleeding the system, but that seemed to be after a partial drain down. I'm presuming that mine needs a complete drain down, a good reverse flush with the 'stat out, 'stat back in and 13 litres of shiny new red coolant (the coolant in mine is green and looks clean). The header tank and radiator are both full and there are no discernable leaks. I've done this kind of thing on other cars, but the Bongo is a bit weird compared to them (I've never had to wave a funnel full of new coolant about to get the air out!) so I feel a bit uncertain. If I decide discretion is the better part of valour, is is safe to drive it to the garage about 6 miles away? Advice from Those Who Know woukd be appreciated.

Sediment light is for sediment / water in the fuel filter IIRC, not the coolant.

Open the drain point on the bottom, catch the fuel / sediment / water mix that comes out, then close the drain.

Dave's right. Here's more advice from Haydn
...under the drivers seat you will find the fuel filter...on the bottom of the filter is a water "sediment" trap....just drain it off and the light should go out.

And more from rita:
Hi,you are looking for the fuel filter, its under the drivers seat on the chassis. The drain plug is at the bottom of the filter. http://www.lushprojects.com/bongopartsm ... mgno=.html
You can either drain or replace the fuel filter, the recommended replacement interval is every 50,000 km.

Thanks guys. It's a load off my mind that it's only a fuel issue and not the cooling system. I'll get straight on it. Can't think why I assumed it was coolant.

Big thanks and sloppy kisses to those who want them (that'll be nobody, then!) to everyone who replied to my cry for help - and so quickly. What a great forum this is! Just removed a cupful of what looked like creosote from the fuel filter drain. No sediment light now. FYI I went in from underneath rather the the driver's seat way. Easier to see what's what from below rather than 'blind' from the top. Thanks again everyone. Thanks too for not taking the p*** out of my thinking that the sediment light referred to coolant. After 4 years of Freda not missing a beat and being 100% reliable, I must have lost my head and panicked.
