Isn't it the electronic kick-down button

Don't think so Muz.

My accelerator pedal doesn't go down far enough to touch it, stops about 6mm short and the plastic button is solid when pushed.

Does it just hold the carpet in place?
Take a torch, toilet roll, and tea bags.

I think this subject was raised years ago on the forum... The common consensus from memory was the "lock" thing was more an aid when the cap was fitted in the factory on the production line.

When it's locked no one can steal it........... unless they turn it anti-clockcwise

On a technical note, in response to post 2, mine kicks down with a short ( 1 ish cm ) fast prod.
Kind of a twitch really.
If you slowly press accelerator alot further it will also kick down but then you get alot of revs in the lower gear.

I prefer the first method which I didn't know about until I read it somewhere ( not Bongo related but tried anyway ).
