Not sure about using a stainless bolt Barrington.
Size for size stainless doesn't have the same tensile strength as steel. I would be tempted to get to an engineers supply place and get a high tensile bolt with a nylok nut.

don't know what you're worrying about - it would only have vibrated out on a pothole - not many of them around these daysBarrington wrote:Right just an update on closer inspection the bolt i removed earlier today that held the spline in place was worn on the inside just at its middle point it must have been loose and wearing out for a while enableing the spline to work loose and rattle about in its housing and do its worsed on the original bolt, scary really just one of those things i guess,,,, so i changed it for a hardend stainless bolt, this is now on my monthly check list![]()
could of been a terible ending but all sorted now thankfully
Well spotted!

Hi Barry
A bit late, but as I promised a photo. today, here it is:

That's 3.75 Cm. of spline sticking out the top.
Anyway, I'm glad you sorted it....What a chilling thought...I have some work to do on our steering...not sure if it needs a new rack yet, but I have a shipment of various parts coming over from Allan's ...and once I have replaced the water-pump....then it's steering...track-rod ends and rack gaiters, and rear A/R bar...droplinks/ bushes and brackets, and front brake-pads.
Once the water-pump is done, that's all the cooling components changed..except the rear heater...and that's getting done in spring...All the suspension is new, with just shockers remaining...then it's down to overhaul of electrics...Transmission was done a few years back, and due for another cleanup...new cambelt........OH when does it stop!!!
Anyway...I'm glad you brought the steering to all of our attention!!!!!
Cheers
Helen

In the beginning there was nothing , then God said "Let there be Light".....There was still nothing , but ,by crikey, you could see it better.
