Rust inside boot door
A friend closed the boot lid with a bang (not knowing his own strength). And I noticed that it dislodged some rust from inside that came out of the two little drain holes at either side. Is this a problem? Is there anything I can do about it? Will I see anything if I take off the inside skin? Thanks.

Re: Rust inside boot door
Before fixing the rust, I would fix the cause, check the seal around the wipe arm

Ok will check that. Any other places where rust might be getting in?
cheers.

Re: Rust inside boot door
I've checked the rubber around the wiper arm entry and it looks ok. Any other suggestions as to where the water could be getting in? Leaking washer water jet maybe?

Re: Rust inside boot door
do you have a spoiler fitted on the top of the tailgate? might be getting in through the fixing points.
you will probably never stop water getting in totally though, thats why the drain holes are there anyway, but there may be a small obstuction inside the tailgate preventing all the water escaping properly and traping a constant puddle at the bottom
best to remove the inner trim panel and try to get in there with a torch and have a look around for anything obvious, might be a bit tricky though i seem to remember it can be a bit cramped inside there, also there will be a plastic membrane behind the panel sealed with a nasty black gunge that sticks to everything so watch out for that, you can peel the membrane away and stick it back afterwards

Yes it does have a spoiler, so I'll have a look at that.

Re: Rust inside boot door
Ok, I think I need a little more help. This may be something or nothing now.
I've taken the spoiler off and had a look where it mounts on to the door, but the four star bolts go through the thin edge of the door and not into the main void. The seals look ok as does the one on the wiring for the brake light on the spoiler. No rust around this bit so I don't think that is where the problem is.
I took the inside panel off the door, and lifted the water shield. I can't see any obvious staining and only a couple of minor surface rust spots. Most of it is clean paint. Nothing that could account for the two or three square inch flakes of rusty metal I've pulled out from inside the void near the drain holes at the bottom.
I'm going to give up on this unless someone has any other ideas of where it might be coming from. What about behind the plastic panel which houses the outside door handles and reg plate, could it be from behind that? And if so, how can I get that panel off to have a better look?
cheers.
