Passenger window kaput!

Good morning all,

Drove home from work this morning and wanted to open both cab windows.

Passenger side has gone belly up - did a search for the fuse and unpeeled the tape to check the wires between the door and body.

Fuse is fine and I cannot see any damage/cracks/breaks etc on any of the wires whatsoever.

So now I'm a bit stuck.

Does this mean that the motor itself may have gone belly up?

Could someone point me in the right direction.

Most common is that you've inadvertently switched it off on the driver's door - there's an isolator there.

Other than that it's most likely the wiring from the body to the door, and most likely the bit at the bottom of the 'U' section, not the bit going through the grommets on each side. You'll have to strip the outer sheath off the cable to inspect the individual wires but the problem one should be all too evident.

If it has been working OK, it's probable, as Muz says, that you've switched the lock on.
If not, check the thick black earth wire in the loom between driver's door and A pillar.

Hi there cheers for the help so far.

I have a black/red thick(ish) cable that looked intact.

I also ensured that we hadn't switched the windows off at the drivers side either.

Got to go out for admin and will try later on this afternoon - once the roast is on.

You've probably tried it, but can it be operated from the switch in the passenger door?

Also, check the feel of the switch itself in the drivers panel. They are easy to damage through over enthusiastic lifting and pressure on the lever. If the lock is on, the natural tendency is to heave a bit harder on the switch to try and get a result. This is probably why this switch seems to fail rather than the driver's window which probably gets opened more often.

if it feels wobbly, pop out the complete switch panel and check that the rocking partof the switch is not cracked around the pivot. If the actuating arm that moves the slide switch below that does the actual electrical switching has jumped out of the neutral position, the slide switch will not work correctly.

The switches on either side of the cab need to see the correct conditon at the opposite side in order to work. This is to prevent a conflict if two people try to work the window at the same time.

My passenger window only works if you pull the close switch (driver side) HALFWAY up - don't pull it hard. Sort of like the process of balancing the clutch on an old knackered car.

That's exactly the symptom of a switch rocker where one side of the plastic body has cracked. It helps if you press down in the middle at the same time as pulling upwards at the front.

Some day I'm going to put a more robust 'axle' right through the entire rocker mechanism but I've got a feeling that if I dont get the drilling right the first time I'll be having to buy a replacement. If I get it right it will last forever.

I finally got round to taking the door card off and having a really good look at the wiring.

After playing around with the connections with a voltmeter both on the door and at the join between the body I found no broken cables.

I fluked every connection that I could think of. Also I connected the motor directly from the battery and all it did was 'click'.

So after some head scratching and a nick on the finger I've come to the conclusion that it's the motor/electrical switch that drives the window itself rather the more common wiring loom issue between the door/body.

If any one has had these symptoms before and rectified it please let me know. Other than that how much does a replacement electric window motor cost (passenger side)

No idea if this will work for you but i had a rover sdi that had the same problem with the passenger window spoke to a friend who was a machanic and he said with the window usally being all the way up or all the way down the motor can arc its self stuck a bit like a spot weld.

sounds daft i know but he said put a bit of wood on the motor and give it a wac with a hammer having nothing to loose i did and after a couple of blows it worked again.

so it is your call if you are looking at a new motor have you anything to loose ?
