How do I know if I have rear air-con?

Post by Poohbear » Mon Apr 11, 2011 12:32 pm

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie here so I guess I'll have loads of questions over the next few weeks.
I have just bought used a 1999 facelift Bongo with the digital climate control. I don't have a manual yet but I've ordered one from Amazon. I can see how to work the climate control and how to operate the rear fan speed and direction. I only seem to be able to get warm air at the back. How do i know whether I have rear air-con? is there something different about the control panel (front or back?) or is there something different under the bonnet that i can look at?

I believe it only works when the front aircon is turned on, but not sure with the climate control versions :?

with the digital climate control... have you enabled the rear with the button lower right side on the front control

Slide the temp slider all the way to the front should be marked 18 (I think) and press the rear button on the dash panel if you hold the rear button down you can alter all settings in the back EXCEPT the temp that can only be done with the slider.

Also - I think the front has to be set to aircon before the rear aircon will work.

I only seem to get hot air out of the back vents so I need to know whether that is because the rear aircon isn't working or whether it's because I don't actually have aircon in the rear. How do I tell?

Have you tried adjusting the temp slider?

If so and you still only get hot air it sounds like something isn't working properly as even without aircon the unit should still blow out unheated air if the slider is set to the lowest temperature.

SFAIK all Bongos have aircon front and rear - some are digital some are manual but all have it - UNLESS - someone has bu66ered around with it and disabled it.

So it would appear that as I have the rear controls then I have rear aircon. So if I'm not getting cold air through the rear vents what do i need to look at? What is separate for the rear aircon as opposed to the front aircon? I assume there is only one radiator / compressor / dryer? So is it just a matter of a flap that directs the cold air to the rear vents? Where is this flap?

You may need to regas the rear aircon unit. If you look under the van behind the drivers door you will see the valves to regas it. The unit is seperate to the front one which would explain why one was working and one not. Let us know how you get on. :D

No Hadyn you are quite correct. My memory let me down.... when we took the rear aircon and matrix my Dad just about blew his head off disconnecting the two pipes at the back, before the unit was 'decompressed' Pitty they are not independent though, less pipe work to corrode  The garage then filled the whole sytem back up. I wonder if the guys system needs a 'top up'? The rear aircon unit is certainly smaller than the front so if the sytem was low it would be more evident on the rear unit.

Poohbear, the flap above the number 61-A09 is the heat flap.. It just covers the heater matrix to bypass unheated air from the rear cabin!! http://www.lushprojects.com/bongopartsm ... mgno=.html

Or if the AC's on chilled air... You may just have a dodgy connection working the flap? or sticky flap??

Remove the panel behind the drivers door (the one with the vents) & you will see the heater & AC gubbins...

The thing that pivots the flap is to the right of the of the ducting on the top of the unit... Check & see if the cable/servo hasn't come adrift... Mines manual, but same principle & same heater unit...!
