I can't answer why the noise seems to be coming from the passenger side, it would of course be behind you anyway. If it were the diff - & I'd like to say it was - you would still have all your gears, the fact you have lost 1st (neutrals) would indicate broken geartrain to me I'm afraid.

Sorry.

Cheers, your views are usually spot on.

I appreciate the input and am prepared for the worst.

This is simailar to what mine did. We found the problem was a chipped tooth in the diff. It all began when my ATF fluid was low, I had similar issues with the gearbox, I was getting first gear and second but on shifting to third it thumped and dropped back down to 2nd. On taking it to the garage the fluid was topped up and the gearbox started working again however I noticed I had a grindy noise coming from the rear end. The ATF fluid was dropped and a chipped tooth was found in the fluid.

New fluid put in and it was still grindy. This got louder as time went on and we decided to get the gearbox reconditioned as this is what our garage thought it was, however on closer inspection the diff was shagged. I ended up buying another Bongo for the parts and 2 bad ones have been made into one good one :D

I will ask about the gearbox for you but it's defo worth checking the diff.

But if the ATF fluid was dropped, wouldn't that mean a chipped tooth in the gearbox, not the diff.? Or did you mean the diff. fluid was dropped and a chipped tooth emerged? Sorry for being thick

Hi
Mr. M.
Funnily enough, I was only thinking the other day that we hadn't heard anything dire from you...i'm really sorry for you in your latest hour of strife...it seems that if you didn't have bad luck with the Bongo, you'd have no luck at all.
I suppose that once this latest thing is fixed, then by rights you'll have zillions of trouble-free miles, as everything will be new....
Best of luck with the repairs
Cheers
Helen

I think there was a chipped planetary gear in the diff and also a chipped tooth in the transfer box #-o was shafted. Fixed now 8)

I've been away & the extended weekends have slowed progress somewhat but -

It is the gearbox.

Bongobits are quoting very very silly money plus an 8 week delivery time.

Will call Bell Hill in the morning but if anyone else has a source - Answers on a postcard please!!

I missed most of last summer with a head replacement, it would be nice to catch the tail end of this one.

Chris, have a chat with Ian Taylor I know he's sourced stuff for others via contacts etc and when I've been there he's had part broken bongos in.

He took out and put back my gearbox the other year to replace a core plug and the costs were sensible.

Here's his Mobile number: 07980 616117

Hope it works out, I think he's got a recovery service available if its more viable to get him to fit it.
