mazda front fogs

Post by Bongo Sully » Wed May 11, 2011 10:20 pm

[Front fogs query

Have managed to obtain a pair of genuine bongo front fogs and am keen to fit them.
However, would appreciate some advice with a couple of points please,
Installation: obvously the plastic blanks in the bumper are knocked out to fit the fogs - and they are held in place by screws or bolts (into the corresponding holes?)
Fog lights: there is a plug on the end of the fogs - does a corresponding plug already exist in-situ to plug into - can't see anything hanging down at first glance?
Operation: can the lights only be used as fogs (as opposed to additional driving lights) - I guess this would have a bearing on where they were 'switched' from (i.e. would I need get a separate switch to mount on the dash (remove one of the blanks?)
Lastly - is it a difficult job (do I need an auto-electrician - or can I do it without too much hassle?)
Apologies if already covered - but couldn't see posting that covered all these points.
Grateful if the responses cater for the less-informed technical bod (me).
:)

hi

you will need a switch to replace a blank for the fogs, the existing wiring loom might have the plugs there somewhere as i believe manufacturers tend to use a fairly uniform wiring loom and just use whats required depending on original spec, i very much doubt the relay would be in situ though, someone on here may be able to advise you where the relay would be normally be situated and which one you may need to get

i think from memory the fog light switch on mine is on the right hand side of the steering wheel, if you pop out your blank there you may find a connector that would normally go to the foglight switch you may need to remove the dash facia though to get a better look and to get better access, if that is there then perhaps there is hope that the tails and plugs to the fogs are under the bonnet tucked away somewhere

but if not it is not too difficult a job to do yourself from scratch, if you feel confident with that sort of thing all the bits you would need you can get from a local "motor factors" type shop or halfrauds ( insulation tape, cable ties, relay and base, switch, inline fuse holder and fuse, whatever type of electrical connectors take your fancy and cable ( personally i would solder and heat shrink all the connections though )

wire them in as fog lights though, dont just add them in to the driving lights circuit so they are on all the time with the headlights, although the signal feed to the relay would be best taken from the headlight circuit so they will only work when the headlights are switched on but are still switchable with the fog light switch

or as you said get a auto sparky to do it, no doubt they will charge an offensive ammount for it though

hope this helps a bit and isnt too confusing

before you knock out the blanks make sure the lights are the correct ones, i got a set from a scrap mazda and the brackets although very similar to bongo ones were in fact no good, and as mine were part of the lamp casing, they would not fit.

I've added Maxda fogs to mine. When it arrived it had "sporty" grilles in place of the foglights, so I can't comment on the normal plastic blanks. I had no wiring at all in place.

It's a fairly simple job to make up a wiring loom though - if you are into that sort of thing. I replaced the connector on the lamp with a similar style waterproof automotive one to keep the wiring joint sealed, rather than just using normal crimp connectors since the wiring joint is right in the firing line from water from the front wheel. You'll need in intermediate relay and a switch too.

Hi, the following is by no means a definitive guide, more a generalization based upon findings on my own bongo...

My bongo (it appears) did not leave the factory with the optional front foglights fitted.

However, the plugs for the front fogs were "loomed" and taped up into a recess in the front bumper.

The blank for the switch was just that, a blank. However! There was a plug attached into redundant lugs at the rear of the "twin battery" blank next to the switch that switches on the rear heaters....

When i plugged in the correct switch, and connected a set of AFTERMARKET front fogs to the discovered plugs taped into the bumper...The fogs worked straight off!

I never added a relay or anything, but i could hear a relay clicking somewhere

I reiterate, i'm not suggesting that every single bongo is set up this way.

Often the lights i consider as being FOGLIGHTS in the bumper are misinterpreted as being SPOT or DRIVING lights. The FOGS should really be used as just that. The lens design scatters the light low and wide to reduce glare to oncoming traffic in foggy conditions. Ideally a focused "pencil" beam type lamp should be used for spot or driving lamps, as they are intended for long range vision.

I've removed the front fog bumper blanks with a stanley knife, the tabs securing the blanks are just a bit too beefy to pop out.

There should still be the securing lugs for the lights on the bumpers without fogs fitted.

Many thanks to all who offered advice - much apreciated.
I'll have a go myself - and see how it goes - may well ask for a bit more help if i get stuck.

Cheers
