Now for round two... I am stripping down the head on the bench to look for the most obvious, but off it goes to:
http://www.headsunlimited.com/
Check out their website; they are within walking distance for me. I use to deal with many years ago when I was in the auto business.

Unfortunate, but expected news! The head is dead. I dropped off this morning with the suspected chamber #1 dismantled [2x intake + 1x exhaust valves, spring, retainers]. There was no visable cracks anywhere, so both the machinist and I assumed only a blown head gasket. But I paid $90 CDN to have them perform a bench pressure test. They only needed to do the dismantled chamber #1. In this case the #1 Exhaust Valve port had a 1/1/2" linear crack trailing from the valve seat clear to the valve guide. I will send photos of this before/after to show the crack.
Now I face ordering a new head from the UK suppliers. I noticed since yesterday that Japan Automotive Solutions are not accepting online orders. Anyone else aware of this? The online catalog is suspended. Why is that? Are they closed for inventory or something?
Does anyone know a reliable supplier for a new Bongo 2.5L WL Cylinder Head; complete w/valves, gasket set, and timing belt as a kit?
eBay shows a few located in the UK; but I have no idea who is considered having a good reputation. They must be able to ship international as well. Any suggestions?
Dave

I think someone has already mentioned the Bongo Fury shop do them and I'm sure Ian is about as reliable as you can get as a supplier I'm pretty sure he will do the best he can to get anything you need to you.
If you are a BF Club member I'm also pretty sure there is a discount available.

Hi Dave, sorry to here about your bongo but at least you know your stuff so are saving a few £ on labour charges.
Be wary of the complete heads offered on ebay here in the UK, they are cheap Chinese aftermarket copies and are not very reliable, as the castings arnt up to scratch, ive heard some have had to be skimmed and some have had to be replaced.
Are you going to blank off the EGR in the process?, does your bongo have the winterpack?

Regarding the EGR; after 15 years operation w/no maintainence to the system, it is likely more problematic anyway. Some mechanics still do this on gas engines here. However, both diesels and gas engines must perform an 'Air Care' test $48 each every TWO years. The diesels are ONLY checked for 'opacity' in the exhaust, so there may be an advantage to doing this. Would you folks recommend an EGR stop plate? All the EGR hoses have gone brittle and leak anyway. I am about to replace every rubber based hose on the vehicle even beyond the coolant system.
Cheers,
Dave

Yes, I have checked through their inventory but only now realized that their pricing includes VAT. For comparative purposes, I have checked all other prices excluding VAT. Must I pay the value added tax from Canada? We have other taxes that the custom brokers levy plus our own form of VAT which we call HST or Harmonized Sales Tax and this tax is levied on everything include most food items too! Can you believe it; we're taxed on groceries for goodness sake!

So are we.
Any VAT registered business here has to charge VAT, so yes, I think you would have to pay the full cost.

If you buy stuff from the club shop, we will not charge VAT to destinations outside the EU. But you may be liable for import duty. Contact me by email first on
[email protected] and we can tell you the shipping costs.

A lot of us blank them, with no obvious adverse affects, mine always get a "fast pass" on the emissions test (don't know offhand how that compares to an opacity test) when it gets MOTd (helped by runnning on veg oil). The air inlet manifold is probably full of gunk due to the egr, can only be an improvement IMO, on the WLT engine it's basically an afterthought to meet more stringent Jap City running emissions limits IMO. Mine is copmpletely removed by blanking off where it exits the turbo & blanking where it enters the air inlet, as well as blanking off the end of the vacuum hose aswell, also means you then have a couple of spare vacuum solenoids if/when one of your fast idle vacuum solenoids fails (usually the front one

)

SFAIK the diesel smoke test that is part of the MOT is the same as an opacity test. Whereas petrols undergo a CO emissions test, which tests the Lambda sensor operation - I think.
