any tips fitting new cam shaft oil seal

Post by emerson1987 » Wed Jun 01, 2011 4:27 pm

Does anyone have any tips on how to get the cam shaft oil seal in on a 2.5 td Bongo with the engine still in place. I am finding it difficult as there is no room to swing a hammer and each time a pry a socket over it I can't manage to get it to sit square. My friend is an engineer and is going to try and make a tool to help us but in the mean time I thought I would see if anybody on here has any advice.

I wish I could help you out, but I haven't received my new cyl. head yet, probably tomorrow when clearing customs. [-o<

But as a general mechanic, and knowing the space limitations at the front of motor, I would have suggested the socket as well. In my case, I will install the seal on the bench prep phase prior to assembly on the block. However, unless there is a seal extraction tool available in your area, the only other thing I might do is back off all the tapet valve adjusters, remove all top cam journals after positioning #4 cylinder to rock between intake & exhaust [this means that #1, 2, & 3 adjusters are all loose], thereafter you can remove or slide back the cam enough to re & re a front seal.

Having only removed & dissassembled ONE Bongo head so far, you might be best to solicit advice from another BongoBud in the forum on the best practice or book example! 8)

Cheers,
Dave
