roof racks

Post by lillian123 » Sat Jun 04, 2011 10:40 pm

HI... We are new members and proud owners of an old shape auto free top! I'll appologise in advance to all you well seasoned long term members. We are kayakers and looking to safely mount the kayaks on the roof. :) We think we have a few options but not sure if we have thought about all the difficulties, or all options for that matter! Can any willing members with relevant experience let us know of their experiences or things to consider before we spend a fortune on a silly mistake.

cheers

Welcome to bongo ownership & the forum :D This is something that comes up quite often, here's one of the many past threads to get you started before any more recent answers come along (I expect a good chunk of owners are of Kayaking/camping  ) - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... ck#p431955
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

Have you fitted a low coolant alarm. That should make sure the kayaks continue to have transport :D

And welcome, and hope you have lots of fun with the Bongo.

Thank you very much for very helpful info, much appreciated! =D>
Is there a roof rack that fits to the bolts and gutter on the auto free top? Although if we do that .... can we have an awningto, oh...so many things to think about.
We do have a coolant alarm fitted on the bongo as Jal autos made clear to us when we purchased the Bongo.
We will ponder the info available on the forum and see if we can find a bolter and gutter fit roof rack.

All the best Mandy x

How heavy are your kayaks? I think the factory AFT mount points are rated for 70 kg, but if you put long length rails in the AFT channel, which can be secured at several points along the roof, it shouldn't be a problem.. the AFT roof is seriously built... you can stand on top of it...
However, the bigger difficulty is getting them up there. I use the spoiler with a towel on top of it and the roof line to slide them up there.
