Oil amount for oil light info.

Post by Cosmic Bus » Sun Jun 05, 2011 1:46 pm

This might be handy to know or maybe not, or common knowledge even, but after a lengthy Pela success yesterday and filter change (don't think i warmed the oil enough) I refilled with 3 litres new oil thinking well that's at least half the amount I need surely.

Took for a short run up the road only to have the oil light come on. Hmmm, panic or not. Left to settle and check dipstick - shows next to nothing. Crikey thinks I, check all round filter, all ok there.

Chuck the remaing 2ltr (just under) in and cross fingers. Oil light out, but still not much on dipstick. Off to buy more tomorrow lol.

Anyway, if the light comes on and you've not chucked a load out of the engine anywhere, then there must be at least 3ltrs of oil swishing about which I guess is more for pressure rather than level. Or both.

What on earth made you drive the bongo when you knew you only had half the amount of oil in?
Capacity of the bongo for a full oil & filter change is @6.7litres (just over 6 if filter not changed), anyone reading this, DO NOT drive around with only 3 litres of oil in - make sure you have enough oil in before you start the engine.
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

Crikey, an interesting post!

You have been very lucky not to knacker (technical term) your engine, there seems to be an issue with the oil feed to the camshaft on the Bongo, and running with a severe lack of oil is playing Russian Roullette with your engine.

Do you get enjoyment from playing 'chicken' crossing roads?

Put it another way, if someone took half your blood out and told you that you would be OK, would you trust them? (Even if you hadn't already fainted.)

Maybe next time just follow what the factsheet says?
When asked about Western Civilisation, Ghandi said 'that would be a good idea'...

Well, it was half-ish

I don't recommend it either, I thought it might be useful if one wanted to know if the oil light switch is working or not tbh.

The oil pressure light also doubles as a low level warning and will come on if its low

It Self Tests when you turn the ignition on to the first turn of the key.

No lighty - No worky.

A much more sensible way to check its working.

Hi Cosmic Bus,

Do you know how much oil you removed with the Pela pump.?

Cheers.

A shade around 5 going by the markings on the pump.

I think I've come across as some kind of loopy engine idiot here  . I was trying to get across that at around 3ltrs of oil, the oil light comes on kinda thing. I guess I didn't know how low low is tbh.

Brings to mind one of my favourite sayings - "If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to serve as a horrible warning" :P

 Yup, I can see that applying here. I'll add it to some of mine :). I also think i got my maths slightly wrong not taking into account the amount in filter (so was probably more like just over 2ltr) and a poorly titled thread and worded post. Looking at it again, it reads like 'there must be at least' as opposed to what i meant 'there is at least'.

If I'd chucked all 5ltr in at one go, this thread would never have existed #-o
