Can anyone tell me what all this stuff is please.
Seems to be connected to the wastegate actuator.
What does it all do, is it necessary as I wanted to put an Eberspacher in here.
If its responsible for increasing the mpg by 3mpg over our old Bongo I'll leave it in.

you can just remove it as a few have done already, its not needed and it certainly wont increase the mpg by 3

You cant remove all of it, you can MOVE it tho, thats the atmospheric reference valve thingy (the brown bit) that and the boost sensor (both bits have 2 wire plugs) are really the only important bit, pull those out and you'll have no turbo, the rest is for the valve in the exhaust, that can all be ripped out without worrying. You could try just extending/replacing the vacuum pipe so it can be relocated out of the way

hope this helps, had to move all mine too, you can leave it all in situ by removing just the bracket it all sits on and move it all about with the help of a few cable ties

Just out of interest, what's that lump on top of the exhaust manifold? Looks like a water heated exchanger of some sort - possibly with EGR exhaust going into it too.....
Not got one of them on my engine (or the atmos reference valve or boost sensor either come to that - is this a later 'fly by wire' engine?)

...

Thanks for that Mazabon, looks not too big a job.
Dave, yes its a 2001 with fly by wire, I don't know what it is either but its obviously water cooled/heated as the bleed tube tube comes from it rather than the head.
As far as I can see its a winter pack one, got the switch on the dash and came with winter tyres on and had two batteries. No rust though, perfect underneath as Phil said it would be.

I'm guessing that you have a twin battery set-up under the bonnet & a little switch by your right knee with a picture of an engine on it . . .
This is the Winter Pack option. Pretty useful if you need to regularly fire up from cold in minus 20 degrees but pretty useless over here.
Its safe (& wise) to junk it as they tend to seize open & cause running problems & its the preffered place to stick a night heater in as many have done already.
