screaching noise..

Post by jjjackieee » Fri Jun 10, 2011 8:13 pm

Got a wierd screaching noise coming from what seems like the front left hand side of the engine.. have taken the heat shield off the manifold to check for broken studs and cant see any damaged ones.. does anyone have any ideas what this could be ??? happens when we reach around 70/80mph.. if we then stop at a junction, the noise stops and doesnt start again till we get up to that speed again...
Any help would be appreciated... thanks :)

Can you see any sooty marks at all showing where exhaust gases may be blowing out if it is one of the studs or the manifold/gasket?
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

I agree Kirsty, sounds like sheared No.1 manifold stud or warped manifold case.

70/80mph........doubt that would be a manifold stud.......that normally sounds on pulling away and gets less as you get going....

 I must admit it doesn't sound like the normal symptoms for manifold issues (hence the terms may & if  ).
What engine has your bongo got jackie?
Are you sure it's coming from the engine & not say a door seal lifting & squealing at high speed? What roof's it got? Vague memories of Not So Old having squealing issues from the aft seal at speed?

if its a diesel :?:

might be worth removing the air intake pipe to the turbo and looking at the compressor wheel, give it a wiggle about, if there is too much movement it could be a worn out turbo rubbing against the casing when under a constant load, or a worn bearing, the screeching may not not always be noticeable under normal driving conditions because it may not be in the higher rev band for long enough for it to get to the critical point.

either way not good news though.

havent heard of this problem with a bongo as yet but it has been the case on another forum i use with performance cars.

Hi. Is the screeching heard whilst you are accelerating or holding your speed? If travelling at 70+ and you lift your foot from the accelerator pedal does the sound disappear?
