post head replaced; no start/run

Post by progroup » Thu Jun 16, 2011 7:58 am

I never imagined this would happen; but after building engines for so many years diesels included, why is this happening :?: :?:

Okay, don't tell me the most obvious; but I have a full charged battery, fuel delivered to each injector, glow plugs hooked up but no heat for some reason, near factory compression, timing dead on, brand new head, wiring all hooked up except EGR as this was eliminated.

From the ignition, just lights, no starter engagement with key! I can turn over starter with my Remote Start Button switch.
Fuel lines bled and each injector.

So, what am I forgetting???

I have found this thread which gives some ideas & locations of fuses & relays you might need to check.

http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... +plug+fuse

Hope you sort it

Nigel.

As far as the glow pluge are concerned......if the "fuseable link" (attached to pos terminal of battery) is o.k. then Assuming all else is as it was then suspect a "main" earth

Was thinking the same sort of thing, that it turns on the remote but not the key?? Check fusible link for glow plug power or power the rail directly for 10 secs to warm the plugs.

Wow! I am always amazed at how quick responses can be :D
I was tired and fraustrated last night not to mention our CANUKS LOST THE STANLEY CUP TO BOSTON... Ratz
Rioting in the streets of Vancouver, looting, and police cars on fire

So, I felt the glow plugs, stone cold [technically, it should try to start w/o them], no dashlight visible, I didn't use a test light or even bother to trouble shoot them at this point - getting dark you see

I have an aftermarket CompuStar Remote Auto Start, Emobilizer, Keyless entry system. Tried that too, no go! I hooked up all electrical connectors and sensors EXCEPT the EGR. Didn't make any difference.

I use a Snap-On Remote Start Button switch directly connected to starter to turn engine over w/o key'd ignition. But that is for testing and turning crank to align timing marks.

I have no idea where the glow plug relay is - ordered both service manuals but not arrived yet [-o<

I will try all that is suggested herein and report back...
Cheers,
Dave

P.S. All my parts finially arrived from the UK and USA. The Airlift 1000 kit looks simple enough, and the tow bar MA465 unit is descent enough too! I must get this puppy running with tow bar and Air Lift by tomorrow's camping trip. Weather is beautiful :D :D

Glow plug relay is on the inside offside wing behind the battery covered with a poly cover

some will start without the glowplugs working some won't Mine didn't when i blew the fusable link with out cranking the begeeus out of it.

As suggested if they are not getting hot the glow plugs are where to look
Is power getting to the glow plug rail? then is there power after the fusable link?
if yes check the relay
If no and the link is blown chack for a short at the glow plug rail and replace link with a fused link or direct replacement

There is a fuse that controls the relay, no 18, 10 amp bottom row.

I doubt there is a problem with the glow circuit.....I think you must get it to turn over and all will be well

use your remote start button to apply power directly to the glow rail for 10 seconds, that will get them at least a bit warmed and help with starting, as far as i can remember the dash glow plug light still comes on if the fusible link is blown, dont quote me on that tho lol ,will experiment on a car tomorrow. Do you have a power probe? if so stick it on the engine block and see if its grounded, as someone said not having an earth strap (passenger side) would mean you'd just be pulling the engine up to +12v, try clamping a jump lead from the engine to battery - or body, just to eliminate a poor contact.

Hey everyone; I must admit being tired and incredibly stupid!!!
This morning, after reading the posts from you generous people, I checked my work and discovered TWO things that I overlooked.

1. My remote start tool - I had forgotten that I removed the ignition switch wire from the starter solinoid #-o
2. Look at my pics again for one that shows the 'Earth Plate' mounted on the Intake Manifold. I didn't mount it yet so the engine's glow circuit had no current!

Generally, I do the utmost minimum on a head refit before checking if it will run. 8) That's what I did and the root cause of all this fuss...

However, after sorting that mess out, the engine started beautifully and ran all day on/off after bleeding the ridiculous cooling system. =D>

Since this morning, I fitted the MA450 Tow Bar kit; easy and not bad for 97.00GBP w/o VAT. Ran out of time to retrofit the AirLift 1000 kit; that's tomorrow before camping. Oh, I forgot to mention that in North America, our means of towing vehicles is completely different than the UK. Ball sizes are different as well as mounting. Tomorrow, which is now today, I will bother one of my local hitch shops to certify weld a 2" square tube receiver into the MA450 crossbar.

I also have another problem... This one is since changing the fuel filter which I will post separately! The engine now runs like crap and excessively rough! :(
See post subject "Is it mechanical or air in the fuel delivery?"
