Steering Rack Boot

Post by V.Mackey » Tue Jun 21, 2011 9:24 am

Been told my steering rack boot has a hole in and is leaking oil so needs to be changed soon!

Can i just disconnect it from the drivers wheel and slided the old one off and new on?

If so will that put my tracking out?

you have a bigger problem, the end seal on your rack has gone, the power steering fluid should never get anywhere near the outer boot

Would that mean take the rack out and put all new seals in?

At least the end seal, its a b*&#h of a job, and usually ends up leaking worse than when you started lol

You could try a Stop Leak, there are 2 chances...it will work or it wont....

Wynns do one as do Lucas Oil.... my Trade buddies swear by the Lucas, I have used it once....not a Bongo and it worked for that vehicle...

Will try it!

Lucas do a 300ml or 900ml dont know how much i'll need or just keep adding it till the leak stops?

The system is 1.3 litres according to the manual, so I guess it depends on their recommendations for the strength of mixture? Or you could just try adding til it stops

Just checked me power steering fluid and it on min it had a full sereice in Feb not sure if they top it up or not?

Got under it much as i could there is black sludge on the boot, every thing els near it is dry but there is two thin pipes higher and further forward then the boot going in to the bottom of the rad with the same slude on them thats the only two places i can find it!

Have cleaned all off so i can keep a eye on it!

the two pipes to the rad are your gearbox oil pipes to the cooler mounted in the bottom of the rad, if the unions are wet or loosing oil check your gearbox oil level, soon.
