Rear windscreen wiper not working

Post by GregC » Mon Jul 11, 2011 9:51 pm

Hi, First time post so please bear with me, I have a 1995 2wd diesel bongo it's been running fine but the rear windscreen wiper has now packed up. I checked the fuse box first, then I checked the wiper motor by running an off battery 12v source through it and it works. I got a fluke meter from where I work and tried the incoming connector with the rear wiper swith in the on position but nothing came through on the meter. I can only think now that it is the switch unless there is some sort of other relay elsewhere. Has anyone had this problem and would be willing to offer advice? If it is the switch how do I get to it?

Thanks in advance,

Cheers,

Greg

Don't see that as a bad sign.. If you tested from where i think you did?? I fitted a tailgate wiper on light.. Kept leaving mine on. (& mine works fine!)

Have you checked the loom from body to tailgate..?

I had the same problem. Broken wires, right inside the tailgate panel, so it all had to be stripped off to get at it. My heated rear screen was not working as well. Broken wire same as the rear wiper.

Not a major fix, just messy.

Hi again, thanks for the info, I haven't checked the loom yet, presumabely a place to check is where it passes from the tailgate to the interior. Is there anywhere else that is a potential weak point?

It does appear to point to the tailgate loom...!

Check out g8dhe's links on this topic.. (Which incidentally helped me on my aforementioned led project!)

joint between body & tailgate in ours. fiddly but do-able. if i remember correctly (it was a day or 2 ago now) quite a few wires had parted or were close to letting go. if they go again i'll probably replace the section that flexes and breaks with 8 core trailer cable , which should be pretty durable.

Hi Greg, when this problem has popped up in the past the rear window heater often doesn't work either... Does the orange dashlight glow when the rear heater is activated? If not then that helps to pinpoint the fault to the rear wiring as it passes through the tailgate.

Thanks for all your advice, I will be checking out the loom this weekend when I have a bit more time. I did check the rear number plate lights and the rear window heater and they both work.

Hi All, After further investigation into the joint between the tailgate and interior there are several wires that are broken. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.

ours was in worse condition than expected once opened up. not too bad a job to sort though , just not a lot of room to swing the soldering iron!!

I've had this problem too - however the broken wire was somwhere in the tailgate itself! eventually had to run a new wire for the wiper down through the pillar in the rear hatch and splice in - found it easiest to take out the grommet for the demister wire and run a fine wire from the bottom of the pillar up to the hole where the demister wire comes out and retreive that with some tweesers, then run another fine wire down from the top the same way - you can then splice in the replacement electrical cable to the wire - haul it down half way, then splice it onto the 2nd wire to get it down to the bottom of the pillar - job done !
