Post by mickf » Mon Jul 25, 2011 6:51 pm

Hi I'm looking to get a decent set of wheels for my 2wd 1995 auto freetop, i've heard rx8 wheels will fit straight on and what tyres i.e. load bearing no. do they have to be?

That's absolute minimum, the 92 on the front is for a specfic size tyre of a 15 " rim, go for as high a rating as you can get, at least 98 IMO, with a speed rating of S as minimum (this includes H, which isfor heavy duty - doesn't follow alphabetically like the rest of the scale) there's a factsheet in the members area with the relevant info.

I had the same q's a few months ago.

After researching I got the answers from the fine peeps on this forum.

RX8 alloys are a straight fit - which is fantastic

Load rating must be a min of 98.

Tyres - I've had a set of ACCELERAs on mine, 225/50/R18 - I went for a slightly larger profile to try and ease the bumps - however the preference is for 225/45/R18 which is what was recommended. Both are rated 99xl's

The 50 profiles, rub a wee bit when I have the full lock on whilst turning on any slightly uneven surface. The wheels are fine with no wear from this (on the plastic 'casing' inside the arches) or any damage to the plastic - it just sounds horrible!

Internet prices tend to be cheaper - http://www.blackcircles.com were the cheapest and the service was excellent £342 for the tyres and fitting!

Tyres should be kept at max pressure (mine are at 44). Also improves fuel consumption - well as best it can get on a 1.9 tonne auto V6!!
Edit: Also see this link: http://igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/view ... 79#p512079

Please take your time with the new rubber on. Your braking will differ and the rolling resistance is altered which is what affects the way your bongo will stop. No biggie, just need to get used to it.

Fuel consumption - minimal difference in my opinion - motorways no change/round town a touch more thirsty!

Road noise - I don't know what you were running on prior to the RX8's, but again we didn't really notice much change - though it did make the drive a tad smoother - then again it could be my fevered imagination.

Get them on and drive really slowly through town checking your sweet ride in the shop windows........drool dribble etc!
Hope this helps - if you are about we are at the Allithwaite meet from this Friday if you fancy a peek!

Cheers now

I had/have 2 225/45/18s and i think you will find the best load index you will get is 92 xtra load i may be wrong ofcourse, MY V6 IS RWD ONLY :!: :!: so i opted for 245/45/18 on rear with 1oo load index looks and drives fine 245s fill the arches better on my van but now my puppy needs 4 new tyres  :? i will take 245/45/18s all round trhis time easier to get the load index, fills arches better and most of all usually cheaper [-o<

They keep a stock of 100 index tyres for RX8 wheels at very sensible prices.

I've got three out there Dar, 225/45 ZR 18s, they've probably got another 5000 miles left in them but one looks a little thin on the last outer inch of tread, perfectly legal though. . . .

If you can get them down your way, you can have them for the price of a pint.

I can feel a relay coming on!
