i really do advise you drop the sump
or pump it out with a pella
my fluid allways looked clean
but as the dipstick only goes to about 1 inch of the sump base
the crud and filth that was in that lower bit was beyond belief
auto change down....is this normal?

Just an update, I am building up to a DIY effort...thanks for the advice all.....just bought a new Pela 6000 for £25.28......result! Found an old forum elsewhere saying if you put code VIP2 into the Mailspeed Marine site when ordering you get £10 off......still works! (but maybe not for long now I've used it!). Could be useful for someone.

I agree with the above, irritating as it is, the lockup is disengaged when you lift off the accelerator then re-engaged when the power is re-applied. It will also disengage if you apply a lot of throttle at 60mph for example. All sounds normal to me.

Thanks Alacrity,
I know you are well respected and experienced, all normal is superb...I will go ahead and change the fluid now...I have been in contact with my importer and he confirms fluid not changed on import....so worth doing I think......also should boost my confidence for doing routine work such as oil/filter changes and general familiarity with the miles of hoses and tubes lurking down below!

Re: auto change down....is this normal?
I had a feeling that my '96 4x4 was changing down under load with too little pressure on the pedal (ie not giving enough low-rev torque before changing down). I loosened and rotated the TPS by a few degrees, but didn't actually test it for voltage first. I have seen an improvement. Still get kick-down but have to push the pedal deeper before it'll change. I can keep it in lock-up for longer when cruising at around 45mph on rolling country roads. Not the same as you're describing, I know.
Have you discounted the TPS yet?

I have had a peer into the engine and assume the TPS is the round black thingy above the throttle cable !? I have had a look for a guidance post/factsheet for piccies but can't find any...anyone help?...all the wiring to it is 'tight' so not even sure how to test the voltage, or adjust.
