Charge Light and Sediment Light on together.

Post by Dannyboy » Mon Aug 29, 2011 9:30 pm

Started my bongo this afternoon. Both the charge light and the sediment light failed to extinguish.
Drove about 40 miles home without a problem. Read some old threads which suggested my alternator is the likely problem.

Is it worth getting the alternator and battery checked or should I just bite the bullet and get a new alternator?

Check the battery voltage with the engine off, should be 12.5v ish.
Check the output voltage from the alternator with the engine runnning, should be between @13.8v & 14.6v. Could be the battery is goosed too which may be cause or effect of the alternator.
May be worth charging up the battery for 48 hrs if it's low & seeing if holds charge.
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.
