persistant beeping, and key won't turn ! Help!!!

Post by Jezza » Tue Aug 30, 2011 11:05 am

Hiya,

recently shifted the steering wheel up, and it seems that since then the (lovely) beeping will not stop when the door(s) are open - even when the key has been fully removed - Arrgghhhh

Also seems to have developed an aversion to our keys, and have had to have several attempts at inserting, and "jiggling" the key around before the ignition barrell will turn (no matter if te steering lock is engaged or not)

It will refuse to turn sometimes, and then you can remove the key, renegage it and it's back to normal - and turns fine

Now is this something electrical (as per other discussions regarding the beeping warning when the key is left in the ignition when the doors are open) and I need to check the connectors in the cowling, or something mechanical - and a squirt of WD-40 down the key slot may resolve

any thoughts most appreciated

Sounds more like something mechanical in the ignition barrel to me?? It seem to still think the key is in the ignition..?!!

Have you recently had new keys cut?

If the symptoms are connected it does sound mechanical, the switch sticking and the linkage, be it a plunger or whatever fouling the barrel somehow. Not really knowing how the switch is activated doesn't help but if it is by the movement of one of the tumblers, maybe that could be sticking. If the sticking is coincidental then it might be a trapped wire?

More likely to be the former I reckon.

A squirt of WD40 on the key or with the tube straight into the barrel should do no harm.

Also, i just thought..! When the key is removed & the wheel is turned slightly, there is an inbuilt steering lock...

Does that work?

from what I can remember the steering lock still works - the missus has the Bongo at the moment, and we had enough trouble coaxing the Bongo to accept the key this morning, I don't want to get her to complicate getting it home by getting her to lock the steering too - so I might try that tonight

The keys aren't new - one is the original, and the cut one was done over a year ago, and has been fine - now both are sticking

The missus is going to try and get hold of some WD-40 and see if that helps

Am concerned if it is a trapped wire - could be fun trying to resolve that!

thanks for your suggestions

For what it's worth
With my 2nd spare key, it will only turn when inserted in the correct orientation. If it will not turn, I remove it and replace it after twisting through 180', the it then works perfectly.
They key it was cut from works perfectly however inserted

Hi ChrisQ - both keys were working either orientation, but did notice when this started happening reinserting the key after twisting it (the key) thruogh 180 degrees it worked ok! this was for both keys

Missus just called to inform me she had engaged the steering lock - and now can't get the key to turn no matter what she tries uh oh!!!

try to turn the key whilst gently moving the gear selector and your foot on the brake peddle, this may help free the in gear interlock.make sure its in park though when the final turn to start is done.

I think that may have resolved it one of the times over the weekend when it stuck - though I wasn't sure if it was coincedental

Of course now the steering lock is engaged she's going to have to grow another are to turn the steering wheel, whilst moving the gear selector, and turning the key !

but I'll let her know - and see if it works - problem is, it that fixes it - what's the underlaying problem !?

to prevent the engine being started whilst the box is in anything else than park there is a key lock mechanism, the brake also has to be pressed to relase this.
its a complicated set up.
someone may post a link to lushy p to help you understand it.
it basically needs adjusting as it sounds like its been forced.
look up interlock on past threads they will help.

Sounds plausable - as I have noticed that sometimes it would be difficult to get out of Park, and made a funny clonk noise when it did come out - I just assumed it was the auto box not quite meshing correctly, and things aligning themselves (had an auto car before that did a similar thing)

thanks for the suggestions

Right - gave the keyslot, and key a squirt of WD-40 and managed to get the locking up of the key resolved - the jiggling of the Auto Shift, and pressing of the brake got it initially released, and the WD-40 seems to have done it's magic. I'm assuming this interlock is mechanical and just needs a slight adjustment !?

HOWEVER - the Beep goes on !!!!

We have noticed a loud click coming from under the dash when we move the key from I to the last position for withdrawl - from somewhere behind the radio - so is there a relay or something back there that controls the beeping - does anyone know

I'll have a wee trawl through the electrical diagrams when I get a moment - but if anyone already knows it woould be appreciated - as the beeping is slowly driving us crazy :?

OK - looked in the schematics - and there is a relay in the circuit for the "Sound Warning System" - which I assume is the beeping

So the relay is X-04 - now any suggestions how I can test the relay, or get a replacement (generic or otherwise!) and/or confirm this relay is buried in the dash somewhere behind the radio ?

many thanks

To stop the beeping you could try unplugging the wires under the steering wheel.See my post about "Stopping key in ignition beeps"
