WIERD NOISE WHEN TURNING RIGHT ??

Post by jayjay71 » Tue Sep 06, 2011 3:14 pm

HI GUYS HAVE RECENTLY PURCHASED BONGO AND WHEN I TURN OR LOCK STEERING WHEEL TO THE RIGHT I GET A WIERD GRATING / WHIRRING SOUND FROM BELOW MY FEET AREA ON RIGHT SIDE.
IT GETS SLIGHTLY HIGHER PITCHED AS YOU REV ENGINE, BUT IF STAYING IN A STRAIGHT LINE ON ROAD NOISE GOES AND DOESNT DO IT ON A LEFT HAND TURN.
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THIS PROBLEM MAY BE SO I CAN GET IT SORTED?
THANK YOU SOO MUCH IF YOU CAN HELP!!

Hi,it sounds like it could be the power steering pump, check the fluid in the reservoir under the drivers seat.

Cheers.

Check the wheel/tyre isn't catching on anything as it turns & check the front driveshaft cv joints/boots if it's 4wd.
Just to confirm is it just rev related ie it happens when stationary, or does it have to be in motion? If so is it related to speed or revs?
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

ITS A 4WD AND IT ONLY DOES IT AFTER THE FIRST RIGHT TURN, IM NOT A MECHANIC SO DONT REALLY KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN YOU SAY CHECK THE CV BOOT ETC?
IT DOES DO IT STATIONARY FOR A LITTLE WHILE IF YOUVE STOPPED AFTER DOING A RIGHT HAND TURN.
THANKS GUYS

Check the power steering reservoir first as suggested above then, if it's doing it stationary, it's not going to be anything on the drivetrain or wheel/tyre related.
Welcome to the forum by the way :D Take the Caps lock off on your keyboard too, it's considered shouting on a forum

You need to lift the drivers seat to see the power steering fluid reservoir, under the bonnet you can only see the brake fluid on the drivers side & coolant expansion tank on the passy side.

Dexron III steering fluid or some power steering stop leak may be an idea, now you just need to suss where it's gone, usual cause is the top pinion seal (follow the steering column through to under the bonnet, under the universal joint at the bottom is a rubber shroud on top of the vertical part of the steering rack, usually leaks from under there, part no 1 on here - http://lushprojects.com/bongopartsmk2/c ... mgno=.html ).
This may help if you want to go for a repair - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... =3&t=39386

Check to see where it's leaking from & wipe it clean then you'll be able to see what's going on.

Might be worth checking the drop links. I had a similar problem, although it wasn't confined to just turn turning in one direction, and it turned out to be just one of the drop link bearings seized up.
