Hissing sound !!

Post by sub123 » Tue Sep 20, 2011 2:37 pm

Hi All,

Just driven home from town (only about 20 mins) and noticed a hissing sound whilst driving. after getting home and switching the engine off it was still hissing. It is coming from under the drivers side and is the pipe circled red in the picture. After a few minutes it got quieter then sounded like it was bubbling..? It was definitely something to do with this pipe as when I felt it I could feel the bubbling sound (if that makes sense!).. It was also very hot.

Can anyone shed any light??

Ta.

That's the top hose - to radiator.
Have you checked the coolant level in the expansion tank??
Don't drive it until problem identified and FIXED.

Yer not talking about the thin vacuum hose running over the top hose are you??

Its just that, when my top hose went there, there was rather alot of steam which came out from under the drivers door when stationary....

The vacuum hose however can split where it attaches to the nipple on that metal elbow where the inter cooler pipe comes up..?

Just covering all possibilities..!!

No... Definitely the fat hose. And looks like the coolant level is very low / non existant!

Should I fill with water to see if it leaks anywhere?

DO NOT drive it anywhere until you have at least refilled & bled it properly, preferably find& fix the leak/problem first though.
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

I've topped it up with water to see if I can see if it's leaking. There seems to be drips coming out from underneath (about an arms length from under the drivers seat).

Gonna make some calls tomorrow.

...and since no-one (including Haydn, the supplier, who has shown remarkable restraint) has said it yet:

Please fit a low coolant alarm.

With luck, you have got away with it this time. But next time, it could be a v. big bill :(

PS - I have no commercial interest whatsoever with this product, but I was one of the first to buy and fit one, and its arguably the best bangs per buck investment I've made in the Bongo. Yer can't cost out peace of mind. 8)

So It's a split top hose on the drivers side. split at the other end at the the joint (so the bloke at my local garage told me!)

Do I need one of these?

http://www.bongobits.com/Main.asp?PageN ... roduct=234

and where would i get a low coolant alarm?

[Insert shameless plug here]
