Starting Problems Again

My Bongo has had this intermittent stating problem appearing a few times over the last year, and it has been a lot worse the last couple of days. The battery is full ycharged and the connections to the starter have been checked and are fine. The sysmptoms are after waiting for the glow plug light to go out, I tunr the key fully and all you get is a slight click then nothing no turn over at all. Usually try a few time and move the gear lever back and forth a few times and eventually it will start, but today it took about 5 minutes before it kicked over. It starts on first kick everytime it kicks over its just getting it to kick over. It has been suggested that it may be a sensor under the automatic lever which senses whether it is out of gear or not.

Any ideas what might be the issue

If you have a single starter battery setup and its a diesel its a cheap and easy fix

Twin starter or petrol is a bit more complicated as the contact kit is not available or has not been reported as such yet

i would suggest overhaulling the starter motor, is it a non winterpack motor,or has it got a switch near your right knee with an engine symbol on it.
you can get a cheapish kit for the standard(non winterpack) starter motor on ebay, try to get the kit that has the plunger replacement part included.
also do a search on here for reconing the starter motor.

Yeah its a non winter pack motor. Will have a look on ebay and see if I can find a kit

Happened to me too. Started about 4 weeks ago - especially when engine was hot. I also thought it was a sensor. Wiggled the gear shift stomped on the brake and voila! it usually started. Not today though. Parked on the main shopping street in Ramsey, went it to shop, back in ten minutes and it wouldn't start - just 'click'. Batteries are fine. Tried by-passing the park sensor and the brake sensor but, alas, no worky.
Thought about by-passing the solenoid with jump leads but found out that the starter/solenoid combo is integral.
Anyone any ideas how I can get a quick fix just to get me home? Can't see me doing a repair on the main street outside the newsagent.
Recovery will cost me an arm and a leg, here on Craggy Island, but could probably get it towed with a tractor. Would it be okay to tow a 4x4 5miles? I read somewhere that it was not a good idea.

When I got stuck at some petrol pumps in France a couple of years ago, a bit of the old hammer tapping on the starter got it going. If not whizz it off & see if you can clean/bodge the contacts enough to get it going, only took me half an hour or so to do the refurb & have it running when I had the parts, mebe worth a look.

Ta. I thought abou doing this but I'm parked in an odd space. Tried hammer time, but I reckon it will have to come off for a tickle up. Have to get down there early in the morning and have another go before the street gets busy.

I posted a new thread, to see if there was a miracle cure, but I think you are probably on the money.

How do you know the batteries are fine, have they been drop tested by a specialist ? it only takes one dodgey cell to create an intermitent fault, it would defo be worth trying a set of jump leads next time it happens to eliminate battery issues, on a high compression diesel the battery needs to be in tip top condition or to put another way a worn out battery on a diesel will start a petrol engine for another year.

By saying that there is a click when you turn the key suggests that there is some voltage getting to the starter so i don't think its to do with the Park sensor.
