Front heater not working - which pipes to check

Post by BigDave » Sat Jan 28, 2012 6:28 pm

I've looked at other post about the front heater not working and it says to check the 2 pipes going into the heater matrix, which pipes are these? Yes I do need a lot of help.
If you mean the two pipes coming out of the tank where you put anti-freeze, the larger top hose was hotter than the bottom one.

Just been out to check everything with engine running for about 10 minutes so I could give you the full story.

Front fan works, blows out in all the right places, different speeds, but stayed very cold. During the summer it only blew out warm air, can't remember about the air con.

Rear fan works, seems to blow out in all the right places and speeds, some heat coming out, moving the temp control did make a difference.

During this time the temp gauge didn't move, but normally does.

Please keep it simple, pictures would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Pic.1 shows the heater supply (red) and return (blue) hoses as seen from under the bonnet. You will not see what’s shown in this pic unless you remove the fan, motor, and all the ducting, but this will give you some idea of the area to look. Don’t start taking things to bits just yet.

Pic.2 shows a side view of the heater stubs (red/blue). The heater is fixed to the bulkhead via a flange such that:
two pipe stubs shown to the RIGHT of the flange appear under the bonnet (these are what the hoses shown in the first pic are connected to)
and
the heater on the LEFT of the flange is in the cab in the passenger side footwell.
Note: Just noticed the pic is upside-down   , but the principle is there.

The two ‘RED’ X’s shown on the pic are the pipes you should be able to see in the passenger footwell, and these should both be very hot.

Unfortunately, even if they are hot, you may still not be getting hot air blowing in the cab. If this is the case, then the heater is very likely to be blocked (common fault) and in need of flushing through.

Oh, and by the way, the temp gauge doesn't generally move much unless it has been modified.

Hi Dave, assuming you don't have an airlock in the front heater matrix.... or something else..? As highlighted by widdowson2008 (Steve) [-o<

Is the connection to the control to the flap that directs & controls the air temperature working..? (In the passenger footwell.)

Do you have a manual or electronic climate control heater set up..?

Belongs to Spenner (Geoff). Remember that day? First time you got your hands on it. Took the bugger to bits looking for leak source and de-grubbing in general.
