Shuddering and smoking on start up

Morning all
Can anyone advise why and what need to check, do to resolve?

On a first morning start up van shudders and smokes like revs are really low and feels like it will stall.
Only happens on a first start up which I find strange.

I agree. And you don't need to head to allans. There are good Bongo mechanics a lot nearer. Lewisham, croydon, bracknell, wraysbury, newbury come to mind plus one in Surrey I think.

Thanks guys just done a bit of googling now and know what I need.
Are the plugs only available thru the club or say would halfords sell them ?

I think I just love any excuse to get into cornwall really heehee,
But my trip of the year coming up so want my van to be tip top. thanks again jilly

these are common shorter ones most use

Mine is a 1998 SGL5 and it takes the longer 102mm glowplugs. Best to have a look to see what you have got first. You can tell if you have the longer ones by looking at the screw cap part at the top, it is longer than normal. I got the wrong ones first time because I did not check.

Morning, i got my plugs from a local motor factors NGK part Y701J, prior to removing / replacing glowplugs its worthwhile ensuring that your cold idle is set correctly read the link from page 3 http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... =3&t=53672

If your coldstart idle is set above 950rpm the ecu will shut off the glowplugs as it thinks its being driven, to adjust this is a 10 minute job with just a 10mm spanner, when engine is stone cold lift the drivers seat and turn on ignition you should see the cold start mechanism operate, turn off ignition and loosen the 10mm lock nut, wind out the little threaded adjuster until just 5mm is poking out the business end, retighten the locknut and go through the coldstart starting proceedure and start the van, if she's still chuffin out smoke on cold start then it may well be your glowplugs but also check that she's not using coolant. keep us posted

Glowplugs are available from Trade Counters... GSF, CAS etc.... DON'T try Halfords...they wont have a clue and you will need a FULL wallet if you do.... Trade counters sell to the public.... you should be able to get them for between £5-£8 each...dependent on who you go through.... use NGK's...

What a great club this is. So many good tips here. You wouldn't get that with yer average car, which is why I find running a Bongo more ecomonical in many ways, despite the higher fuel consumption.
