Battery and sediment light on - alternator failed?

Post by catzi » Sun May 27, 2012 5:30 pm

Noticed a couple of days ago that the battery and sediment lights were on together.

Had a look at the alternator fact sheet and found the following:

1. Voltage across battery is less than 12 volts with high idle.
2. No magnetism noticeable at side of alternator when ignition on - I'm not sure where to test for the field voltage.
3. I have a split relay and disconnected the leisure battery but no difference noticed.
4. I've also taken the battery out and stuck it on a tester/charger and the tester hasn't reported any problems.

Anything else I should check or can I assume that the alternator has failed (it's spinning and the belts look fine from my uneducated perspective)?

If so, can anyone recommend a garage in the Glasgow area that could get it sorted fairly quickly? I could take it over to Campercraft but Kirkaldy is a bit of a hike for me from Cumbernauld. We are hoping to go away over the Jubilee weekend but this may put the kybosh on that :(

You can check the 30 Amp HEAD fuse;

This supplies the Field coil with power and also the headlights!

Checked the head fuse and it appears to be fine - I can get a resistance across it.

Yep battery and sediment lights=alternator.

Bill at Campercraft did mine for me last summer. Very quick and reasonably priced.
Why?...........Because somebody might wave back.

Will have to phone around tomorrow. Don't need this now as our other car is going into the bodyshop first thing tomorrow and will be out of action for the next three days.

Booked to go into Campercraft tomorrow morning - Bill has an alternator. Battery on charge right now so hopefully I can get there before the battery runs out! #-o

Thanks to Bill at Campercraft for another good job. Alternator replaced and Bongo serviced. It turned out one of the rear anti-rollbar brackets had broken and they ended up having to cut off both mounting plates and weld replacements.

Was looking very jealously at the 04 plate Bongo he's just sold...
