New shape Bongo fuel tank is 60 litres . . .

Post by beachguild » Thu Nov 16, 2006 3:01 pm

. . . or at least ours (W reg - Year 2000) is!
I found out to my cost yesterday when I ran out of fuel heading to the Petrol Station with what I had calculated to be about 4 litres left.

I have been working on the principle that when our fuel light comes on it takes 55 litres to fill up. I have established this over a number of months. Yesterday, I was heading to work needing to do about 40 miles with what I had calculated was enough fuel for 60!

However, after running out, I put 5 litres in (thanks to a passing friend), noticed that the fuel light had gone out after adding 5 litres from empty, :? then drove 5 miles to the petrol station and put a further 57 litres in resulting in the diesel being right up to the top of the filler.  Therefore allowing 1 litre to fill the fuel pipe, fuel pump, filler hose etc. and 1 litre to drive to the petrol station results in a tank size of 60 Litres

I can confirm your observations Dave.

I have an old type Bongo (96) and a new type (99), when the fuel light on the new type is fully illuminated, I can fill to the brim with 55 litres of fuel.

On the old type, without a fuel light, I ran out of fuel and only managed to fill to the brim with 61 litres of fuel. Both Bomgos appear to have identical
tanks, and both types are supposed to hold 65 litres.

If this is the case then there must be 4 or 5 litres of fuel left in the tank which cannot be used. I think this applies to most vehicles to avoid picking up
crap in the bottom of the tank.

So if my fuel light comes on in the new type, I know I have to fill up in the next 30 miles or risk running out.

When I originally picked up my Bongo, there was 5 litres of gooey crap in the bottom of the tank. So much that the sediment light was on all the time. It proved impossible to get it out, so I had to get the fuel tank (which is a sealed unit) replaced.

Due to the above information, I updated the Bongo fuel calculator.

If you choose to "Open" the file it will run "On the fly" and will completely
disappear when you close it.

If you choose to "Save" the file, you can choose the directory in which to
save it and then point a desktop icon to the relevant location.

If you save it to the desktop, Windows will store it somewhere obtuse but
you can find it using the Icon properties, or search for the file:
Bongompg.exe

This file is autonomous in that it does not write anything to the Windows
resources and simply deleting this file removes it completely.

Grumpo,

Any objection if I place it on the main website?
