What are the S2 and L1 gears for?

Post by LeeW » Mon Aug 27, 2012 8:32 pm

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm new to automatic gearboxes. Does anyone know what the S2 and L1 gears are for or how to use them?

S2 holds the box in 1st and 2nd gears.

L1 holds the box in 1st gear.

and you don't need them 99.99% of the time.

The little button on the side of the gear lever either stops the box changing up higher than 3rd or stops it locking up in 4th (not sure which).

Thanks for that. I'd browsed the topics for it but with no joy. Just searched for something about wheel sizes and strangely stumbled upon the answer to my gearbox question

I seem to remember it being mentioned that S2 starts off in 2nd not 1st and is thus better in snow/ice.

The numbers 1,2 and 3 refer to how that position behaves when the hold button is in. With hold off, the letter is the clue.

I tend to put my autobox into S2 when city driving, stop start stuff 30mph zones or less...!
Cheaper by comparison to a race horse...

Could some one make this in to a sticker so we could put it on the sunvisor as I never remember what they are for?

Hi
It comes with a factory sticker beside the gear-lever....the celluloid black bit with the white writing....pretty self-explanatory! 8) 8) 8) Low ratio, Slow traffic, and normal Driving...also , the hold function scribed thereon with explanatory line marking
Cheers

A bit more reading for you:

http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 82#p444982
http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... =automatic

The latter one includes part of the owner's manual describing the use of the gearbox.

Personally, I've started using S2 for a bit of engine braking and driving in 30 mph limits and L1 for trundling around camp sites.
Yet to get to grips with the HOLD button.....

I use engine braking all the time, making extensive / routine use of S1 and HOLD I try not to be too rough on the engine, so don't move to S1 if it will push revs over 2500. And whatever I use for engine braking on hills, I prefer the revs not to go much over 3000rpm. The trick is to apply brakes at intervals to prevent speed from building up. My very heavily loaded Bongo experienced a bit of brake fade once after dealing with an hour of upping and downing the Yorkshire Dales. So now I try and keep brakes cool and ready, where I can.
