Donkeyzilla & the Zedonks

Post by Muzorewa » Sun Sep 02, 2012 6:19 pm

No, it’s not the name of a new rhythm & blues band

Well the last three weekends have seen us on the south (New Forest), west (Nantcol waterfalls) and north (Caithness) coasts so it would be a shame not to add the east coast on what was otherwise a blank weekend

There was a story on the BBC website a few weeks ago (might have been on the TV for all I know, one of these days I might get sufficiently bored to watch one) about a huge donkey that had arrived in an animal sanctuary, not a freak of nature but a proper recognised breed. They also had some zedonks (zebra / donkey hybrids) so this wasn’t going to be a difficult trip to sell to Muzette

So, off to the Radcliffe Donkey Sanctuary between Mablethorpe and Skegness in Lincolnshire :D

Great photos, Paul. Are the zedonks domesticated enough to be ridden? Just wondering, because you don't see zebras being ridden, do you?

They didn't look it. They were in a field with a few donkeys with signs saying 'strictily no feeding' whereas all the other fields & paddocks were fine with feeding carrots. I was surprised they didn't offer any rides at all but then I guess that's a hike in insurance to offer that kind of thing. And helmets, risk assessments etc

It was a well run affair though, considering it's all voluntary and free entry, there was good parking & toilets etc, plus a bar and McDonkey's

Shame it's not more local :D

Yeah! I saw your photo of McDonkeys! I guess if it was free entry, it would be extra hassle to offer rides too. Although I would think it would be a good money earner for them as most kids would want to, I would think.

In August at my favourite campsite, well my favourite place, in Cornwall, they put on donkey derbys. All the kids (and big kids) have a go and they use trotting carts. There's enthusiastic betting and it's great fun. Raises a lot of money for the local charities.

Sounds good. There's no insurance issues with donkey rides on Skegness beach either. Definitely the kids would go for it, they can't fund the sanctuary on 50p pots of carrots alone
