Horn (again!), and blowers
hi all!
wonder if anyone can help shed some light on few electrical issues going on with my bongo. Firstly the horn has ceased working, ive read a lot on here about peoples issues with this before and attempted to have a fiddle but to no avail. im fairly confident this isnt a earthing issue, but i may be wrong! Also the air blowers have stopped working, wondering if these could be in any roundabout way linked?? Theres a whole host of wires going everywhere under the steering wheel, some of which ive previously tracked and seemed to be connected to nothing at both ends!!, so its virtually impossible without stripping the whole thing out to work out whats going where. Ive heard relays mentioned on here a fair bit but wouldnt desperately know what i was looking for in that respect.
any help will be greatly appreciated. Cheers!!

My horn stopped working too, so I'll be very interested in the replies you get on this score. From what I understand, to get at the wiring to check can be a bit hairy cos the air-bag is involved, and you don't want that blowing up in yer face!!
On the blower issue, I recently stripped spenners blower fan. (he had the same problem - no blowers and winter looming).
After thoroughly cleaning the fan bearings, a bit of soldering, and with forum advice, we got spenners working as good as new. No cost at all - just an hour or two.
Not a difficult job at all.

Worth checking the fuse to start with;

The fuse doesn't supply anything else, so nothing else you can check to see if that's not working.
After that, the circuit is pretty simple;

Look on page 77, use the
to move on a page, for the items locations,
You have the switch on the steering wheel and its connector back down the steering column E1-01,
The switch operates the relay F3-03, you should be able to feel this click if you rest your hand on the relay while someone operates the switch, if you can feel this then the problem must be on the other side of the relay, the relay then powers the horn.
There are only two earth points to worry about, the horn itself bolts to the chassis and that is its earth so check its mounting, the other earth is for the switch on the steering wheel back down the steering column.

Hi
Coo, those diagrams are great, Geoff...
Horn...usually they accumulate all manner of muck and rust to bits. Some Bongos have one, others have 2 horns. I just checked mine to see whether there was a live feed anywhere along the wiring , and went from there...added new horns and it's all working. Personal preference was to put a compressor up inside the bonnet out of the way of the wet, and pipe hoses to the horns at the front with the trumpets facing down to avoid water accumulation on the diaphragms ...3 horns, and by 'eck, they're loud...available nearly everywhere, and cheap!...and pedestrians and other motorists do get out of the way sharpish
Cheers

In the beginning there was nothing , then God said "Let there be Light".....There was still nothing , but ,by crikey, you could see it better.

Re: Horn (again!), and blowers
thanks for the quick replies folks!,
ive checked the fuse with a known good fuse and still no joy with the horn. Cleaned up all connections etc etc. I had this same problem before and i used a wire straight from battery to horn to check whether horn was faulty and it worked and also seemed to kick it into life as it all worked again for a while after that!....maybe just coincidence!
as far as the blower goes another strange anomaly with it as aircon wasnt working either but i presumed this was all interlinked, so ive changed the fuse to the aircon and now thats working, but only when the blower is set to levels 1 or 3?? otherwise it stops, and still not really any air coming through but it makes the right noises like it working! Ive removed the air intake top but the air fan (i presume it is) doesnt seem to move freely like i was expecting it to having read through other problems on here, in fact it doesnt really move at all. I'll post a picture so to make sure im looking at the right thing! cheers.

Re: Horn (again!), and blowers
My horn worked sometimes, other times did not garage thought with all this wet weather I had hit a large puddle, changed the horn and it's working no problems.

looks like you have the top cover off, ping the control cable off for the flap, thentake off the 12v supply to the motor.Davejustice2000 wrote:picture of fan (at a guess)
then unbolt the fuse box shown to the left in the pic. behind that are 2 nuts that hold the top edge of the fan unit in place, the bottom edge sits in a slot so just lift it away to the front.
turn the fan unit over and get into the lower face where the springs and brushes are located, lube/ clean /replace as ness.
while its in bits clean the face of the aircon/heater rad, this gets very blocked with jap dragon flies and road crud.
do a search for the resister pack on the forum, this will explain the 1 and 3 speed fan, on early models its just a quick soldering job, on later models its a resister to replace.
oh and may be a good idea to block that open rad spigot at the rad cap.

Re: Horn (again!), and blowers
hey all,
right ventured further under the bonnet of the bongo today and took fan assembly out etc. this is how it looks:

pretty grubby really. ive cleaned it all up. springs seems ok etc. Im unsure what i should be looking for with the brushes though. Is it possible to tell from these pictures if anything is knackered beyond repair??
Also what the open rad spigot?? is that the tube underneath the radiator cap?, and should it have a stopper in the end?? sorry for all the questions! much appreciated.

The bearings need some work but the brushes look OK compare with this shot http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 50#p338750

Re: Horn (again!), and blowers
a proper bongo rad has no vent like that so it needs blanking of

drill the hole out bigger in the screwed on base cover, this will allow the water to escape better.Davejustice2000 wrote:

the spigot could be blanked by fitting a very small length of coolant pipe with clip that fits, then push inside a correct size bolt then fit a clip to that. most peeps say it wont leak but they do. on cool down it will also suck in air here rather than the correct place, at the expansion tank.
