Misfire again.

Post by Bongo and Tonic » Thu Dec 07, 2006 2:08 pm

My bongo misfires, but only when started from cold. Also there is a lot of smoke at this time as well.

I first suspected the glow plugs, but I have had them out and tested them and all seems fine. All plugs look new, are clean, and glow when activated.

Anybody have any other ideas what this could be?

If the plugs seem OK, then you need to check the relay and the fuse (the 'fuse' is actually a short piece of wire from the battery terminal) The relay is behind the battery.

A simple check is to :-

Lift up the drivers seat.
Connect a voltmeter (or 12 v lamp) up to the glowplug bus bar and earth
Switch on the ignition
The voltmeter should read 12v, or light up the lamp.
It will then go on and off intermittently as the relay switches on and off - and eventually off.

If you get nothing, it is the relay, the fuse, or the wiring from the relay to the bus bar(very unlikely)

I tested the glow plugs by connecting them (in turn) to the bus bar so it's getting 12v OK.

The glowplugs may be failing under pressure ?
