Waeco MS 50 cruise control fitment - HELP!

Post by mickc » Mon Jun 24, 2013 11:51 am

Hi all.
I bought a Waeco MS 50 cruise control for my Bongo and it won't operate when the van is rolling!
This is the email I sent to Conrad UK this morning -

"After fitting the cruise control to my Mazda Bongo 2.5 TD (1996) the control unit will not read the signal from the speedometer when the vehicle is moving and therefore will not operate. The vehicle speedometer is as fitted as standard, (KPH) with an MPH face and has not been rechipped. The speedometer is operating normally.
The static test is working, the control unit will increase and decrease engine rpm using the set/on-off/reset buttons as per the instruction manual indicating that the throttle/vacuum connections are working as required.

The propshaft sensor was fitted but would also not operate, due to the amount of movement and flex in the supplied bracket and the lackof secure connection of the magnet to the propshaft with the parts supplied.

The auto electrician who carried out the installation is at a loss as to the way forward from here, all the wiring and vacuum connections are good, the problem is that the signal from the speedometer is not being read by the control unit.

Could you please advise as to a solution? If I need to buy additional parts to complete the install then I will do so. at this point in time I have purchased this item and it will not work.

Many thanks in advance."

This is the only complaint I have with the Bongo, that it has no cruise control fitted as standard so I decided to buy the Waeco to make long distance driving easier.

The auto electrician who did the installation does all the work for one of the importers so is well aware of the quirks of Bongo electrics. We tried all the alternatives in the instruction manual i.e sensitivity settings, snipping the black wire on the control box as per the manual but all to no avail. We are not sure of the solution, any advice will be welcome.

TIA.

Has the wire loop on the control unit been cut?

If not, cut it, if it isn't cut the pulse rate is wrong and you need to be doing over 100mph before the unit gets a pulse rate it can recognise.

The info about this is in the manual the fitter should have read when fitting it.

From memory there are 2 wires the same colour (blue/white?) make certain the connection is to the correct one.
Take a torch, toilet roll, and tea bags.

Yes the black wire loop was cut, made no difference. We also tried the 3 different sensitivity settings on the control unit, also made no difference. I tried it out initially on a nearby trading estate and then on the motorway but it wouldn't engage at up to 70mph.
I'm not an electrician but logic tells me that it must be an issue with the pulse from the speedo head as the static test worked perfectly.

Yes something is definitely not connected correctly.

The fitter needs to through it all again checking each connection in turn.

My speedo has been chipped and even with that mine has worked faultlessly for 6 years now.

Exactly what happened when I fitted mine, hence I know there are two wires the same colour behind the speedo.

You can either use the blue/white wire going into speedo, or green/red that is marked SP Out. Just fitted MS50 in my second Bongo (V6 petrol) and will update my factsheet that I started a few years back. Hope to get this finally on the website in the not too distant future.

You definitely do not need the propshaft sensor to make it work. The static test just proves the vacuum and actuator is ok, but it sounds like the speed signal is not being taken from correct location.

Now working after a bit of head scratching and soldering, it seems the control unit wasn't reading the speedo pulse correctly using connectors.

I'm well pleased with the result.

Thank you all for your helpful input.
