Alternative Names for Common Parts
Here at Mission Control we try and keep the most commonly requested parts in stock at all times. But sometimes we get in a right mix-up because certain parts are known by different names. For instance anti-roll bar drop links are also called stabiliser bars, tie rod ends are called track rod ends, bushes are often called gaiters, and lower suspension arms become wishbones.
We are going to create an A-Z of all the parts we stock, including alternative names and publish it on the site, beginning at aerial (or is it antenna?) and finishing at workshop manual (or is it manual, workshop?).
So we are interested in hearing your alternative name for common parts. Here's a few to get you going.
Cabin light, door handles, axle oil seals, CV joint, fan speed resistor, heater motor, indicator cluster, wheel arch, oxygen sensor.......there's loads more. All suggestions gratefully received.

When I was a child growing up on a farm in Jersey I regularly heard agricultural types using a patois word pronounced 'Phootoo' to describe anything broken. It was commonly used at school with regard to pencils, bicycles etc. and also, of course, by drivers of faulty vehicles.
We were not pulled up on its use by our teachers who never seemed to realise that 'foutu' was the past participle of an expletive French verb.

Timing belt/cam belt
Oxygen sensor/lambda sensor/HEGO sensor
MAF sensor/airflow meter
Crankshaft sensor/TDC sensor/engine speed sensor
Water pump/coolant pump
That's all I can think of off hand just now.

What about axle seals? Are these the same as "half shaft" seals?

Re: Alternative Names for Common Parts
Hi Ian
On an axle, there are half-shaft seals, and propshaft seals, but I suppose if bought as a kit, they would be "axle seals"
There could be confusion if a vehicle has IRS as opposed to a solid tubular axle...The seals would no longer be half-shaft seals, but "Half-Axle " seals, thus "axle seals " may be appropriate.....UNLESS they get known as Drive-shafts instead of half axle, as some people refer to the half-axles as drive shafts, and some people refer to propshafts as drive-shafts...ER....shall I continue
Cheers
Helen

In the beginning there was nothing , then God said "Let there be Light".....There was still nothing , but ,by crikey, you could see it better.
