Engine check warning light 2L

Can anyone give me a reason why this warning light is on permanently when there is nothing apparently wrong with my 2 litre petrol Bongo. Thanks.

Why do you think there is nothing wrong with the engine ?

I didn't say there's nothing wrong I said 'apparently' nothing wrong - i.e there is no sign of anything wrong.

Well if you get the code out of the OBD unit it will tell you what it believes is wrong.

Are you able to post a photo, or a description of what it looks like? Also, has it always been like that, or has there been some event or other symptoms leading up to it? What things have you checked so far: oil, battery condition, etc?

Thanks for that Simon. It's definitely the engine warning light which is not shown in the graphic in your message. I've checked everything I can think of and all seems to be ok. I took it up to the garage today but they don't have the right size plug for their diagnostics machine so he suggested I get a scanner from the internet and then give him the result of the scan. I've looked on ebay and there are OBD scanners at a reasonable price but I've read elsewhere on this forum that they won't fit my diagnostics socket. Is this correct?

You will struggle to find an off the shelf diagnostics reader. I've been keeping an eye on various threads on the forum and I don't recall anyone finding one that works. There is one piece of software which apparently works, but you have to find the correct hardware and lead to use it with.

Nope its for the CANBUS, Bongo doesn't even use OBD1, let alone OBD2.

Thanks g8dhe. Have found a garage with the required reader and the code is P0135 - oxygen sensor malfunction. He told me that this sensor was required by Japanese regulations but is not necessary under UK regs and that really there is no need to replace it. He quoted a price for the part of £200 + 1 hour labour so there is food for thought here.

I'm not an expert on engines, but the Oxygen sensor or Lambda sensor monitors the remaining Oxygen in the exhaust gases to control the emissions level that will be checked during the next MOT!

It would seem many people fail the MOT when the sensor is faulty, maybe its not a requirement for your sensor to be working in the UK, but being within the emissions limits certainly is!

Duff lambda sensor will probably result in a rich mixture which wastes petrol, loss of power and could result in premature failure of the catalytic converter. Universal lambda sensors can be bought for around £40.

Thanks for all the wise advice. I will now get the sensor replaced. I would prefer to do it myself but it sounds like it's too difficult for me. I assume its necessary to get at the exhaust under the van.
