naughty side lights

Post by Kerry Allen » Thu Nov 21, 2013 8:24 pm

hi there.
My dashboard light has been dipping off then on again for a while, before I realised that I was also loosing all my sidelights as well! Yesterday they went off completely, had to drive home with hazard lights flashing. replaced the fuse but that didn't help. they are back on again now but not reliable. A mechanic thinks it might be the switch by the stalk on the steering column, because it's the Dash light as well as ALL the sidelights, has anyone else had this problem? or does the mechanics idea sound right? and if so where could i get a new part?

Intermittent faults are an absolute pig to track down.

My guess would be the switch so could be worth a squirt of switch cleaner, Maplins or Flea Bay.

Good luck.

Mike Walsall: yes, front head lights (full and dipped) work indicators front and back work, and break lights work, but Nothing else!

It seems it's now less of an intermittent problem and more like a near permanent issue, they haven't worked at all today. difficult when you have to drive home in the dark and you have no rear lights!!

Switch Cleaner? Ok, so what do I do? I need to get at the switch behind the steering wheel? also, would that be a temporary fix to confirm the problem?

Lift up the bonnet .. on the passengers side of the inner wing there are a row of rubber covered boxes .. give them a spray with WD40 (or a Water Dispersal fluid) then the top but one the wires a wriggle ... there maybe a weak lecky connection ..
