tent coming away from free top

Post by Afcbandy » Tue Jun 10, 2014 9:25 pm

Hi,

Im a complete novice when it comes to all things diy (not good for a bongo owner!) But ive noticed the metal bar that attaches the tent to the free top is coming away on one side. The holes the screws screw into seem to be much too big now. Is there some kind of bracket I can put on to fix it?

Its a common problem, the screws screw into a stud that is glued into the fibreglass roof, the glue fails! You need to hold the stud with a wrench and remove the screw - this can be quite tough as they use a Loctite compound to stop vibration causing the screw to undo itself - when you have the stud off, clean it up and use some Araldite epoxy glue to fix it back into the hole. Once the glue has set then put the screw back in, you will often find several of the studs will have come loose so check them all whilst your at it!

Or you could try lightly tapping the rails back into place with a small hammer. Obviously it's a temporary fix, but I did that six months ago with mine and they're still Ok. :)

We had the same issue. For a couple of years we just knocked the inserts back into the roof with a block of wood & a hammer but sooner or later you'll need to do a proper fix. We just applied a liberal dose of adhesive sealant to the inserts and all the mating surfaces, pushed into position and then packed it up with wooden blocks (you can partly lower the roof onto the blocks for added pressure), left overnight and several years on we're still good

Mine came loose in the top corner during the gale we had at the Welsh bash.
I partly lowered the roof and gave them a tap with my peg mallet.
All good since but next time i will add glue.
Always be ready for a Top Up!
