Van keeps cutting out

Post by Adamskiking » Sun Jun 15, 2014 2:33 pm

I have an intermitant problem with my van but it's getting more frequent. When coming to a stop the vans rev's seem to drop and the van cut's out. When I try to start it, it turns over fine but won't start, after a few attempts it evetually starts, When is starts again the rev's go up but then it just dies again (you can be pressing the acelerator but this doesn't seem to register at all!). It then works perfectly for the next few days and then does it again. Every time I've taken it to the garage they can't find fault with it. They've checked the Battery, glow plugs, fuel pump and injectors and say it's all fine. If anyone has any clue it would be greatly received as we really need to sort this out asap.
It's a 2.5 diesel, 2002 4wd.

Do a search on here for "Wastegate Actuator". There's also a fact sheet in the member's area.

Thanks Ian! Ive read julians post's, my problem seems to be a bit different but could be the same thing. The van is'nt losing power when I drive at all though, it's just when it comes to a stand still that it seems there isnt enough revs to keep the engine ticking over. (the rev meter sometimes goes up and down without applying the accelerator as well) The really strange thing is that when its does start again the accelerator dosen't seem to work at all and it just sputter's out again.
If any Bongonauts out there know of a good Bongo specialist I could take it to in the wiltshire area I'd really appreciate it as my garage dont have a clue what it is. [-o<

Try ADS in Bristol, not too far from Calne.

When was the last time the fuel filter was changed?

Some have found a blocked fuel tank vent causes vacuum build up leading to symptoms a bit like this. Worth trying loosening the filler cap to see if it improves things.

The fuel filter was changed in Feb so not too long ago.
It happened again! this time stuck in the fast lane in traffic on the M5! I did take the fuel cap off but this made no difference.
The wierd thing is when it eventually starts the accelerator seems not to work and it just sputters out again, this happened probably 20 times before I could get control of the accelerator again and just keep the revs up flicking between N and D. When the traffic started moving again it drove fine doing 70-80mph until I had to stop again and then had to keep starting it again.

Mine was doing this (it is again actually) and allthough mine is sort of self inflicted I think it will be the same thing - the Banjo filter - it is smaller than the nail area of your little finger, it hides inside the fuel injection pump under the Banjo bolt where the fuel line goes into the pump - under a 1 1/2 long spring down a deep dark hole.

I will try and take pics tomorrow of cleaning mine (I'm sure that's what's causing mine to stall at low revs) - my injection pump also leaks which tends to make the problem worse - Does your pump leak diesel?

If the accelerator is is not responding, it may indicate a problem with the potentiometer attached to the pedal or the 'thing' on the the injector pump that controls the flow of fuel. There must also be sort form of ECU somewhere.

It would be worthwhile changing/cleaning the 3 filters to eliminate them from the problem.(anything can happen from Feb)

PS depending on the type/year of pump it might not have a strainer.
