Insurance
Set about seeing if quotes were any good - LV seemed the best bet not the cheapest - so I try changing the vehicle details from manual to automatic - guess what they don't cover automatics - when asking for a reason - they are not on my approved list - but I say manual gearbox are why is that - because they are on our approved list - at which point I gave up - anyone care to advise a source for quotes?
Re: Insurance
If you mean "Liverpool Victoria" this company definitely insure automatic transmission vehicles.
If you are not happy with the response you got, contact Mr John O Roarke.

Totally mental! Again insurers deciding what and what not they will insure depending on the risk factor. I did not realise that automatics are uninsurable Hmm!
The problem is that they all still perceive risks differently and charge accordingly. You would think that by now they would all be working from a standardised risk matrix given that they are supposed to be sharing information

Re: Insurance
Perhaps I'm missing something but what is the point of getting an insurance quote for a type of gearbox that is not fitted to the vehicle being quoted for? If the transmission differs from the type on their database for that vehicle registration then it is likely to throw up a warning that the vehicle may have been modified since it was manufactured which most insurers will not cover.
Re: Insurance
The vehicle details are provided automatically (no pun intended) when you put your reg number in or when you put make/model. Having been asked to correct any details that were in error I tried to change the gearbox to auto which is when the fun began. I was forced into the manual gearbox option as they did not offer me an alternative.
Now for the news of the advertisers on fury- sorry to say Wise were way off the mark but Adrian Flux came up trumps - Comprehensive + loan car + recovery, reasonable excess, lost keys cover, third party any other vehicle and European cover for £30 more than last year which is about 10% but a far better policy. Will have a closer look at the items especially European cover when I get the paperwork. £321 in total, am happy with that.

Re: Insurance
I just got a renewal quote from Gocompare - their web site said the Bongo was a van and sent me to their van insurance site - it came back at about half of the price I am currently paying even though they know it is an unmodified 8 seater.
Is that too good to be true?

Re: Insurance
Are they aware that it's a Bongo Friendee and a grey import? There are many models of just a Bongo - the Friendee is a model on it's own. Some Mazda Bongo vans were imported normally.psquiddy wrote:I just got a renewal quote from Gocompare - their web site said the Bongo was a van and sent me to their van insurance site - it came back at about half of the price I am currently paying even though they know it is an unmodified 8 seater.

Yes - there was a question about it being an import from Japan.francophile1947 wrote:Are they aware that it's a Bongo Friendee and a grey import? Re: Insurance
Probably. If they are happy to insure it as 'Mazda Bongo Friendee' rather than any other van-based variant (E2000, B2500, Bongo Brawny, etc) then you may be ok.psquiddy wrote:Is that too good to be true?
Re: Insurance
Having read this thread over Christmas I scrutinised my renewal with Direct Line for £159. It listed the Make & Model as Mazda E Bongo 2.5TD Auto. Guess when I first got it two years ago I didn't know any better but since then I have had the benefit of some of Simon's wisdom! When challenged, Direct Line insisted that E Bongo came up against my reg and the only other model vaguely similar was a Mazda Frendy (note the spelling) and that sounded more like a van or pickup. They have noted my assertions that I have challenged the information on the policy and agreed cover as is. Also they insist on recording the year as that first registered in this country rather than manufacture. I have been scrupulously honest on their recovery policy and insisted on recording it as 18 years old.
All this says it would be so easy to keep shelling out for insurance and find out when you really need it that the insurers have a get-you-in-jail card. Just hope that the notes they have made against my policy are indelible!
